    280 rev limiter

recently purchased a 280, & was wondering what the limits are as far as how high you can spin the motor with that charging system & if rapair or someone else can up the rpms on the 8200 box, im aware I could go to the old style electronics but was just wondering how far you can go with the new charging system.

    rev limit

    For the consumer 280 - 7700 rpm.

For the Offshore Race - 8250 rpm.

Rapair has a few tricks to get more rpm from the stock electronics - 8700 rpm is fairly consistent, with a few turning as much as 9200 rpm.

    I hope this helps,

    280 rev limit

Thanks wayne I guess ill get in touch with rapair & have them turn it up 9000 would be nice can the alternator & crank withstand those revs, meaning the added load to the upper crank to drive the alternator; I was advised to go to a lightwt. flywheel when around 9000,& also some warning about damaging the fields, etc. in the alternator with high revs are a issue

    Phil,

I have not heard about any alternator failures as of yet. But sustained use at 9000 rpm might be an issue eventually if the internal voltage regulator should fail. I have Drag electronics on the 280 on my STV River Rocket, and I am happy so far as a lake use boat - no racing.

    280 rev limits

thats pretty much what ive heard I have a 87 lowdeck stv i purchased from diamond marine when they were in long island ,I guess i should see if i can spin my 32 cleaver high enough with the stock 280 to see if rpms are even a issue but sooner or later, with some power upgrades,i might have to deal with the higher rpms & I liked the idea of keeping the charging system,I also have a 30 lighting et which probably will spin up about 600 or so more than the 32 any idea how the stock 280 will run on my setup with these props, what kind of numbers are you turning

Our 280 has had the limiter removed by Rapair and as Wayne stated earlier, it will rev between 8700 and 9200 quite easily. The only problem is that the ignition will break up on occasion around 8500 and then run normal. Sure can mess up a good run when racing your buddies. It will spin a 28 ET up to 8900 fairly consistently. Never tried anything bigger.
