    v4 crossflow need help!!

a friend of mine is having a problem with his v4 crossflow,

problem: motor starts and runs at high idle while coughing a sputtering, if i drop it down to idle it coughs, backfires and spits untill it stalls... if i disconnect #4 plug wire at idle the motor stops coughing and spitting, it just idles and idles pretty dam good considering its only 3 cyls, when i plug the plug back in the motor starts sputtering and eventually stalls.

then when i dissconnect all the other plug wires (one at a time) the motor acts as it should when loosing a cyl, idle drops power loss etc.

when i went to shut the engine off after turning the key off the engine lost about 200rpm but kept running?!?! wit the key in the off position!! when i turned the key back on the motor would gain some rpm then shut off same....

what could it be? i want to think electrical but could it be reeds??

    thanks in advance

that would be a bad pack, and most likley the one on the port side (due to #4 not doing anything when pulled)... thats the key reason why omc's dont shut off when the key is turned off is because of the powerpack.. get a known working one and go from there

    V-4 packs

On twin pack models you can try just changing sides with the packs. Both packs have a blocking diode, but only the port pack needs it. If you swap sides then the bad diode ends up on the starboard side that doesn't use that feature.

This only works if the pack doesn't have other problems. Just an idea to save ya bucks. Dan

    what about a coil replacement

it is weird but i have noticed some engines will run differently based on which coil is bad. what i am saying is that maybe it is possible that this particular cylinder really shows a bad coil.

i don't know but coils are pretty cheap. you can get them really cheap at your local NAPA. also, it wouldn't hurt to clean the carbs and it is easy to do.

i am no expert but i think i would start with a coil.

    Lightbulb

... i think i hear a spark going to the block when the motor makes a thump and missfires...

Run it at night and look for fire jumping to ground. You might just have a bad plug wire

    bleeding fire

i actually had a coid bleeding fire once a couple years ago and, to be honest, it ran fine, so i thought. after i replaced the coil i picked up 300 rpm that the motor never had for years before.
