Question “Big Power Compairo”… How much torque/power difference between a merc 5.0 and 6.0

Well I have a 2001 5.0 merc 15” that I use on my 9’ inflatable, one of the things I have started doing with it this summer is towing my kids on a tube, as you would imagine with 5.0 I can just barely get the whole works on a plane, one kid (smaller the better, really a struggle with the 13 year old), with a small tube and just me in the dingy. My inflatable is rated for 10hp max so I have been looking for a 9.9, I talked to my local merc guy to see what deals he has and the best deal he has in stock is a left over 2003 6.0. The 6.0 are a twin cyl and the 5.0 only a single. So does anyone have any first hand experence compairing the hole shot of a merc 5.0 with a merc 6.0? Or should I hold out and wait for a deal on an 8 or 9.9 Thanks

    If it's rated for 10HP, you'll need at least a 15HP.

skywagon I said it was big power LOL

CMF & 10.5' I agree but have you ever looked at the transome on a small inflatable, not on there very good, and mine has an air floor, hard to add knees, LOL. I really want a 9.9 or 15, it's just a good deal on the 6.0 so trying to make a decision

Go with a late-model 9.9 or 15. The 6 and 8 are 12.8 cubic inches, while the 9.9 and 15 are 16 cubic inches. If you're going to be pulling tubes, you'll want the extra grunt of the 9.9 or 15. I don't think going to the 6 will be a satisfactory upgrade, although it will outperform the 5 hp engine by a noticable margin.

The differences in the engines are as follows:

The 6 and 8 are exactly the same (same block, pistons, reeds, etc.) - the only difference is the carb and jetting.

The 9.9 and 15 are the same except for the carb, jetting, AND the 15 has an exhaust tube whereas the 9.9 does not.

Thanks for the info Greg, I knew you would understand without laughing , although I think the ribbin' is funny too

BTW I have been pulling a smal tube with the 5.0 hp, it really is fun, I will try to get a picture as we are going out in the crusier today and I have all next week off to play with the kids. Thanks again, Scott

The 6.0 is a realy good deal though .....

But I will probably hold out

I would love to see photos Scott - post away!

I understand about the 6, but for the same weight and size, you can have more than twice the power (with a 9.9 or 15). Besides, don't you want to ride in the tube too? You'll want to go faster than a 6 can pull you!

I'm actually buying a one of LPB's Flivers for my 2004 9.9. I figure I should put that little engine to use somehow, and that would be a blast!

All very good points Greg, I am leaving the 6 at the dealer

Make sure you post some pics of your new LPB, would love to see how they run with the 9.9

BTW I am officially in the market for a 15" 9.9, what year were the last changes made, in other words what is the oldest "late model", thanks again Scott

    Scott,

1995 and newer is what you want. Prior to 1995, the 9.9 was 12.8 cu.in. (same as the 6 and 8). They are fantastic little engines, and the 9.9 had enough power to push my Carolina Skiff J12 to 22 mph with me aboard.
