    Mosquito magnet, anyone have one?

Has anyone tried or use one of those Mosquito Magnets that run off of a propane tank? Curious if they really work or not. Here is a pic of one:

I had one in Florida. It collected a quarter pound of dehydrated mosquitoes a month (thousands), but I think it attracted them from elsewhere.
You'd be better off talking your neighbor into buying one

Our neighbors at the cottage have one they've set up in a spot away from their hot tub. It works wonders. A friend of my girlfriends parents has one of the larger models and swears by it. Winnipeg is known for those pesky things; I'd be suprised if they didn't test them here before producing them........

This year will probably be real bad considering all of the stagnant water sitting around.

Didn't do a thing for my parent's back yard...but they live near a huge lake. Home Depot gave us a full refund and they had an entire truck load that they had to return to the factory. Enen tried the "mosquito Deleto"...which is a variation on the same theme. the best thing I have found is one of those hand-foggers, the ones you light. They have a small blue gas tank, like the ones you use to solder pipe with, and a re-fillable insecticide tank. We fog a couple of hours before we use the pool and it seems to work well. Mom and Dad usually fog a couple of times a week to keep them at bay.

    they work

    we have 2 of them.

there are some tricks. first get the right size model. If you get the big one, it will draw to many of the critters. If you get one that is 2 small it will not atract enough of them.

the trick is to get the exhaust that it expels to be carried down wind. the mosquitos will follow the scent back up wind to the unit. Place the unit away from where you want to be, yet still able to blow downwind. Also, it is a long term cure. it works by reducing the population over the season.

We have one on the waterfront side and one on the land side of the house and we are please.

you can call the magnet people and they will talk to you about it. also they have an informative website.

    hope this helps.

Bats are cool unless you are trying to cast a lure

I know they were real interested in my rototiller motor in the garden the other night...but don't know about the propane things.

Once they got bad at the lake, so I got a giant spray can of bug killer you use in horse barns...went out at dusk in perfect calm and sprayed around in the air. That seemed to cut them down for some time, think I did it two weekends in a row. No swamp area by us, they seem to come from the woods where I sprayed. Get rid of anything that holds water too like tires, puddles, etc. Also seems that if I mow the yard bigger it helps, when it gets about 6" high I wack the outlying area back down.

The smoke making things do work, just have to be the right type to get a kick out of fogging the place up...

The Propane is slowly burned. It generates heat, and Carbon Dioxide, the two primary things that attract mosquitoes and identify their victims as a living mammal. Some of the units also release a pheromone cocktail similar to the one in animal sweat and skin. The device vacuums them up into a filter where they soon die.

    The foggers do work.
The type that attract the bugs may not. You either draw them from everywhere and there is an endless supply so you got them or there is a limited amount and they're killed.

They do work, like said previously, locate them so they don't draw the beasts across your path. AND they will decimate the population.

Myself, I always love a twelve pack and a good high powered bug zapper. Must be something about a fetish for the electric chair
