sixabove is probably done and dusted on this project by now but, i am just getting started on a similar project. So Jason Johnson, I would very much like to know what you are up to.
I am dropping a 90 yamy on a 14' drop deck wingboat, to run in the 1250cc.super stock class here in Oz. My rules are simple, motor mods unlimited, gearbox mods unlimited but must run thru hub exhaust type gearbox, no 'racing' mids.
the motor i scored is a 1988 90 yamy 20" mid but needs heaps of work. i am first going to put new swivel bracket bushes in and solid mounts while i have it apart. (got 2 bastard stuck powerhead bolts that i am still fighting with. ) got my steering arms and picked up a bob's 4in1 jacking plate off ebay just recently.
sorry to add to an old thread but it seems to me there is some new interest.
Jason, fast fred seems to know a fair bit about what we are up to and with any luck he will chime in with some knowledge and wisdom for us.

I think you OZy guys are on to something I think that here in the US of A you'll be seeing more and more 3 and 4 bangers and alot of the non traditional motors making a surge..there in expencive and a ton of fun to drive on a small boat

Fun post keep it up....I have head that the old Johnsons wil make good power because unlike the Mercs you can shave the heads???? Im not familair with the other brands but have a 13' Mini Hawk that I'm looking to power...and more is better!!!!!!!!!!!!!

check out this old link from the for sale section. I think Dash is still active on this board, I reckon he could probably steer you in the right direction for modding these motors

16 year bump. I'm looking to shorten a 60 Yamaha and this is good info. Don't wanna lose it to spring cleaning. I may just cut and weld my mid to get to 13"s. It's going on thundercat inflatable race boat so a little shorter is better since short mids are usually a few inches off of the transom.
