    John Gibbs

Looks like John Gibbs. He lives in Havasu now but worked for OMC and ran for T.A.R.T at that time.

There's some kind of box in front of the engine cowl...............

The tire on the piling is European.

The gentleman laying on the dock has been overcome by noxious fumes.

The race boat hull has a rare South American parasite.......

The Johnson to the right of the picture is more dependable than the one on the left....... But any pictures with two Johnsons shouldn't be on a family website.

One of the things that always made me a little skeptical about OMC racers was there constant pleading......." Somebody look at my johnson.....please fix my johnson....... try jump starting my johnson........ do you have a spare johnson?"

Mercury guys were apparently more secure in our manhood.

Rich you are right on all accounts. Here are a few other items of interest.
    1) The boat >> rocker bottom Molinari cut down
    2) Scotti rear cowl
    3) early 8 barrel engine without orange Stinger cowl.
    4) This boat was run by Geoff Briggs and John Schubert in Paris

Now you ask how did a Mercury person know all this. Well I'd like to say that I am just a real sharp guy that can pick-up on details.

But that is not the case. I got it from the guy in the cockpit.

    BOAT #6

Actually, if that really is John Gibbs as his number was #6, the boat is a Schulze. His rear cowlings did have the step with the air holes. If it is John, the guy on the dock could have been Lou Eppel.

Now about the boat Geoff & I drove in Paris in 1971. It was a Molinari originally built for Renato's cousin, Scotti and raced in 1970 at Paris by Jimbo. After the Paris race it was shipped to Waukegan and then raced in Havasu by I believe Jimbo again. Geoff & I first got a ride in it in the canal behind the factory in Brugge, Belgium.

I started the first two hours, actually fired late as I first forgot to put the cap on the plunger switch. After 2 hours I moved in to 2nd behind Billy Seebold. Geoff took over and promptly moved us in to first. At the 4th hour I took over again and was told by Lou when I came around the first lap by the pits where the sea wall jutted out in to the Seine to watch for his sign to speeed up or slow down if we had a good lead. I got the slow down sign. t about 5hrs 10 minutes, making the one buoy pit turn the motor slowed. I got to the upper turn & it stopped. Threw a rod. We had a 20 minute lead over Mike Downard. Needless to say neither Geoff nor I slept that night.

Not to sound stupid, but MJR29, can you identify yourself?

Well there you have it........ OMC's were inherently safer because they didn't have the power needed to blow over a Sid-Son.......

Mike was always looking to promote Mercury...... and there's nothing like seeing one spinning in the air down a race course to put "Black Power" on the front page.........

    Way to go Butler!
