Anybody Ever Moved Crossed Country??
*YES THIS IS A BOATING RELATED THREAD DISCLAIMER* I am moving cross country so I can boat more!
Starting to look into truck rental and it looks like about $12 - $1300. (no mileage charge) for a 25' truck to haul our "boating" stuff from Ohio to Florida.
Anybody have any experience with this and/or have any tips for me??
Plenty of experience (too much) moving but not cross country like this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If this helps, I had Wanda's Hauling move one of my boats from NC to CA and they did it in a timely manner and for a very reasonable price. They can take multiple boats and many different configurations. 919-556-8304ph 919-801-3370cell
Where are you moving to?

Rental trucks and cars aint cheap with a drop off in fl, I was recently looking at renting a uhaul to bring a boat south with so i wouldnt have to drive both ways and it was about a 1000 bucks. You can go the other way for half and the rental car places will give you the cars free, you only pay for insurance droping off out of fl.I guess job prospects must be looking up or is it the wonderful sub 20 deg temps and lovely overcast skys lightin a fire under yo ass.Dave

You need to shop around and timing will vary the prices significantly. I rented a truck last January from Kansas to Florida and prices varied from around $650 to about $1,500 for different schedules. Penske started out cheap but I didn't have a firm schedule. One week later they were $1,500. UHaul quoted about $1,000 to start. Then I needed to change to a bigger truck the day before the move which screwed everything up. But they found a truck in a small town about 30 miles away and they gave it to me for under $700. Just lucky I guess. Turns out it was a small cycle shop that also did UHauls. That was a 17' box van with a diesel.
It seemed to depend on where the trucks are and where they think they need them next. Use the websites and play with the schedules. Or try to find a smaller office where someone with some smarts works and ask their advice on when or how to get one for less.

Thanx Guys!
Beko, preciatte the offer Bro! Not that close yet. I don't think
Tom, I shoulda figured that one huh
Mendo. more concerned with household furnishings than the boats. I get down there often enough that the boats shouldn't be a problem.
Dave, LEAVE ME ALONE!! You're right actually. On the second half.
We have friends that just left for the St.Pete area yeterday to close on a new condo and invited us down for the weekend of the 7th for some big pirate party/weekend they have.
We are trying to stay serious though and only go down again when we can be productive.
(Donna is ready today)
Barry, good call I'll do that.
We are to the point that I think I want to start towing junk down with us on our future trips.
Have two places offered for temporary storage so maye the Stream will follow us back down and stay next trip.
I blew off work today and sat around and whined about the weather all damn day!!
I was very close to just climibing in something and haulin ass!!
I am just now starting to look serious at the actual moving part though.
Ran off almost all my friends from moving my shop the last half dozen times.
Now I'm thinkin I just need to liquidate everything that can be replaced once down.
For example: Steel shop drawers (with roller slides) and cabinets with epoxy work bench, hydraulic press, table saw, drill press, compressor etc.
All great stuff but a serious pain in the ass to move.
Right Tom??
Maybe I'll make you and Kevin a deal on all this stuff when the time comes??
It's all help build several OMC projects so maybe it would be good Karma for your black motors??Last edited by Instigator; 01-28-2004 at 04:35 PM.

Another idea.......
Go pick up a truck trader, look for a diesel box truck like Isuzu, Mitsubishi, or whatever. Even if it has a zillion miles on it. All it has to do is get over Jelico Mountain in Tennessee, the rest is downhill. Like 1200 miles.
Pack the necessities in the back, have the Mrs. drive the other vehicle.
Get down here and sell the box truck. Even if you sell it for a couple hundred dollars less. Who cares? It was cheaper than forking out $1000 plus to a rental agency.
I started to do this, but my plans worked out differently.

Already thought of that
my old racing partner did that 20 yrs ago to move from Ohio to Washington state.
Penskee even lists there used trucks on their web site.
P.S., forecast for Saturday is a low of 5 bellow!!I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

movin south. . .
Did it 7 years ago, northern Indiana to SW FL, visited the area a few times, sold all my furniture and such, moved only the things that are important to me. Built a cargo trailer, made two or three trips. Got down, did the yard sale thing, bought a house full of stuff for $1500 bucks. set up in condo, then research the area for the place to buy. Have a nice set up on Charlotte Harbor, five minutes to the harbor. just a few thoughts.

PS Gary, just remember, all that northern stuff don't fit in down in

Gary, let me know what you decide to get rid of, BUT keep in mind, I don't want anything I have to feed or that can get pregnant, got enough of that already.
