Triad Boats and STV Custom Race Boats
Wanted to say, thank you to "Triad Powerboats and STV
Custom Boats" Wally and his son Roby for their excellent work on my Red S.T.V.. Their attention to detail impressed me the most. They replaced my 6 gallon drag tank with a 28 Gallon Fuel Cell. The glass work looked better than I had expected, and their paint work was even better. Next they custom made a second
seat and mount it one behind the other for me. Sure like their shop, and could not believe all the good looking boats to choose from. If any of you get a chance to visit TRIAD Boats it's worth the ride to Modoc, South Carolina. Triad Powerboats and STV Custom Race BoatsLast edited by Dinomite; 12-22-2003 at 07:58 AM.

Triad Boats
I just returned from the TRIAD -STV shop
myself. Had the DR-20 customized a little for me. CJ's
legs and neck were to short. I had the seat cut out
and lowered 1.5" so my helmet wouldnt hit the roof of
the capsule. Robbie buffed out my paint job, got rid
of some racing scratches, and Anibel installed a
custom foot rest for me. These guys do great
work...its always fun to go to Wallys shop. Dinomite,
hope to see you at the get together next year. I'll
show you how to outrun a twin engine DCB in the poker
run! I also got a sneak peak and the new drag boat. I
cant tell you about it or they will hire Wayne Tripp
to kill me in my sleep. Dave - Saw your new Rocket
while I was there too. I looked really good. You need
a Drag motor on that thing.IF YOU CAN'T OUT RUN ME (AND YOU CAN'T) FOLLOW QUIETLY.

Sure did
They have a long ways in getting ready for you too. It should be a great looking boat once finished. They really do exceptional work, and pay alot of attention to details. Hope to see you at the gathering next summer!! As far as "Selma" I really like Harold and he does great work as well.

cbra212
Cbra212 I saw the secret boat also it looks like it will be very fast. But I think the one you might have to worry about killing you is De Witt, I think he has alot of time invested there. I know that alot of people who have dealt with me, know that I am a perfectionist weather I`m selling or buying. And I have to say that the River Rocket turned out even better then I could of imagined. As far as motors go I have a new 260 SS and a 280 SS can`t afford a drag motor. So I don`t know what it is going to get. But thank you for your compliment. Have a Merry Christmas Thanks Dave

Triad Boats
Just out of curuiosity, could anyone speak about what materials W. Lampkin uses in his transoms.. Anyone ever had any durability issues, gel-coat cracks etc.. I'm sure it's all top quality stuff, but I have an insationable appetite for transom information..

Transoms
Triad STV's and all Triad built boats other than full blown raceboats have a 2.5" thick laminated No Rot GWFP XL 10 Copper Arsenic Treated plywood transom. Guaranteed not to rot. Over one million boats to date have have built (in the industry not at Triad) with this product, no failures, no problems. It it much stronger than a foam transom. The Kevlar/Fiberglass lamination schedule is proprietary. We do not wish to reveal it. It is proven to be strong enough. We only use AME 4000 vinylester resin throught the entire 100% of the boat. Raceboats have an option to Aircraft epoxy (but its very expensive)We have not had any customer call us to date with any type of transom cracking. Any and all wood used in our boats (other thanraceboats) are GWFP XL 10. Raceboats are built with Okume plywood 1088 specifications, each sheet certified. Raceboat transoms are built with an aircraft product - 6 lb per cu foot urethane foam filled honeycomb composite sheets.

Gelcoat cracks
Gelcoat cracks around transoms usually occur from several factors: (1) from poor design or installation of hull and deck fitting, bonding and bracing. The transom itself is not usually at fault. (2)Another common cause of gelcoat cracks around transom areas is ABUSE. I see many "wheelie" photographs on this and other boards. It might look cool, but thats one of the worst things you can do to your boat. You can also pound it repeatedly at high speed in 2 - 3 foot waves, that can create those small gelcoat cracks. Gelcoat has a very very very very low tensile elongation spec., meaning it will not flex and forgive. The lamininates under it, depending upon the resin and laminate schedule have a much higher tensile elongation spec. They will allow for some flexing without damage to the laminate. The gelcoat sitting on top of that laminate cannot flex that much without cracking.(3) Trailering. Heavy motors on large jackplates on a poorly built and fitted trailer can put a great deal of stress around the transom area. Especially on poor roads.

Triad Boats
I appreciate you getting back with reliable information.. I could spend hours talking about a boat even if it doesn't have an engine on it.. Growing up around boats that almost always showed signs of stress or fracture, it's great to see the advancements in strength and durability.. I never thought that I would see the day when super light, fast boats hold up the way they do.. Thanks again.

Poor Roads
I have for a long time felt that much if not most of damaged transoms are a result of boat owners not realizing that their boat trailer doesn't ride anywhere near as well on the roads as their vehicle..
