Capacity Plate ?
I have recently purchased a 1996 STV Euro. And it does not have an actual capacity plate. Something the Fish Cops on my river have already questioned. What is does have, is a nice large yellow sticker stating the boat was manufactured for racing purposes, and does not comply with USCG specifications for some things, but then it says by Grant of Exemption (CGB 91-001).
My questions is - Does anyone know what Grant of Exemption (CGB 91-001) is? I am having no luck trying to figures this one out. HELP!
Thanks, Wayne

Here's Some Info
Individual manufacturers must apply for exemption. If the manufacturer didn't apply, then there should be a USCG Capacity Plate on the Hull. You just can't get a "Grant of Exemption" plate and stick it on your hull.
Check this link..................it is a .pdf document so you need Acrobat Reader.

Well I hope old Barney doesn't decide to give me the old search or I may be in a heap o trouble, I asked if there was a plate for my particular boat and was told no, so I wonder what I do next?

I was told I could go to my local fish commission, and I could file for a capacity plate. I don't really want to do that, though, I'd rather not have one issued since the STV's are 19ft long.
Since your boat is not long enough for unlimited horsepower, stretch all your measurements out a little when filling out the paperwork for capacity plate. That is the suggestion I was given by someone, if I have to file for my boat.

tell your local fish cops to go do their homework.
you do not need a capacity plate because of the
exemption. i wouldn't get one, you're only asking
for trouble in the future.
take care,

The capacity plate, to my understanding, is to inform the user of how many total pounds he can load onto the boat, how many passengers, regardless of the number of seats- and in conjunction with load, he can carry. Both of these must be followed. Engine capacity is a manufactorers requirement.
This plate isn't for weekend law enforcement dudes.
If during the observation of a law enforcer they determine your overloaded in weight or passengers it's thier opinion that counts. This could be anything from 6 people in the bow of a bow rider or anything that is obviously unsafe. The plate no longer matters.
If they need a capacity plate to determine that with 4 seats you shouldn't have 5 people on board. Or that you have 4 immense people and several tons of supplies that the boat is very low in the water and your overloaded then they shouldn't be in this line of work. They don't weigh the stuff in your boat but observe how it handles and sits in the water, like you should be doing as the "captain" of the boat.
BTW my STV ProCompSki had roughly 800 lbs of water on board (calculated), like 3 - 260 lb passengers!. It really didn't sit low or nothing. There is a very large weight reserve on these hulls. The sponsons and center hull were nearly full so supplied very little bouancy.
If law enforcement can't understand the STVs capacity plate then it's thier problem even when they make it yours. Ask them what they don't understand and what they want explained to them.
Also why they stopped you.
Seems pretty clear to me.'90 STV

They don't need a reason to pull you over, random inspection. I guess it's legal.
My baja had seating for 4 or 5 (2 + bench), but the plate said 6 or 900...'89 Hydrostream Vegas XT, '90 Merc 2.4 Bridgeport PCU EFI

Wayne, with the Force motor you are running, I don't think they will give you any problems.

Ralph, if it was between a Force and an OMC - Sorry to say - I'd have to run a Force. They're easier to paint black! (Those props we were trying this weekend on your boat, Post the info you gathered and ask if anyone could explain the speeds and rpms you're getting?)
