    1986 V-King/2.4 200 Merc set-up? Blowing out....any experienced V-King guys out there

At around 79-80mph my 2.4 200 Merc, with a stock gearcase is blowing out. I'm turning a 26" pitch in-line chopper 5800-6000rpms, the 200 is mounted on a Bobs 5-1/2" jackplate, and it's raised 4-1/2" above the top of the transom. Short of getting a nose-coned gearcase...are there anything else I could try to keep from blowing out? Lowering the motor down??? Any ideas? thanks.

A torque tamer mounted to the skeg might help. Raising the engine, and installing a transom mount water pick up might also help. Be careful Boss!

Put a cone on it as well as a torque tab. Just trust me it’s 100% the correct thing to do unless you like really dangerous situations

I had the same issue until I changed props. Can't tell you what I changed to cuz it was 45 years ago and I can barely remember what I had for breakfast. Cone and torque tab are also essential at that speed.

80 mph is right about the limit of a stock gearcase. You are going to need a cone. Height above the transom doesn't matter. Height of propshaft to pad is what matters. A big ear chopper will probably work better than an inline chopper.
