Promax conversion?
I’ve had it with bad computers, injectors, sensors, lean cylinders, etc.
I’ve got a 7 petal intake and wh22 carb setup I’m thinking of putting on this promax when I get it rebuilt…again. Probably going with new vertex pistons this time after a fresh boring.
What do you think? How much will it hurt the value?

Hotrod Merc motors are half price of oem built Merc motors roughly speaking.

I’m afraid to run another rebuild on same efi system. Local mechanic said merc had a recall on this engine and year. Seems they were lean on same cylinders that scuffed on me. Maybe I’ll just sell and forget about it.

I can't even find a carb 2.5/200 out west here. At. Any. Price.
Maybe I'm not looking in the right place. I only know to look at craigslist and FB market place.
I was lucky to have found my 2.4/200, and it had been a salt motor previously... (except for the powerhead, which was a factory replacement from late 1989, which was much more recently dropped on to the 1983 mid/lower).

For the record, I'm as into tech as anyone. It's just that for my uses carbs are better than trying to keep old EFI tech going.

you can add an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and fatten it up a little. The age of these motors and systems in order for them to run properly and reliably you really need to go through the fuel system. Clean and flow all the injectors. Lap the reed cages and fresh reeds. Timing on the conservative side imo 23 max. I run with a guy who also built a very similar motor to mine and he runs 20 degrees timing. He’s very close to as fast as mine is and he runs regular grade pump fuel!
Anyways back on track once it’s tight and sorted some plug reading to verify all is well is the final step. Promax motors are awesome it’s rare to see someone unhappy with one when it’s working right. It can be very frustrating to go through the type of aggravations your facing though and sometimes moving onto another is satisfying. A promax hurt or running is not a hard sell so you have optionsHydrostream dreamin

Injectors were cleaned and flowed. Maintained 35 lbs of fuel pressure at all times. What’s a fair price with 2 scored cylinders? Has a fat shaft torquemaster. Cowl and midsection in good condition. Midsection in NOT drilled. Wish I could find the thread where someone told me not to use WSM rings.

Yeah that ring problem is a major bummer for ya man sorry to hear about that. Good too shape promax 225 seem to sell around the 7-8k range complete with lower. Maybe start at half that? 3500? Something like that would probably sell. Might do better to pull it apart and sell the power head, cowl, lower etc all onesy twosey it’s hard to say what’ll sell best it really depends on your area and who’s looking for what. You could probably trade that motor straight up for a good running 2.5 200 too if you found one. Some guys give those away I’ve seen them for for a grand in good running condition. Most fishin motors seem to go 2-5k pending condition and model. It would have to be one heck of a nice fishin 2.5 to pull 5k though. I’d say 3-4 is the norm for a good one
