1978 20 ft Jones tunnel
So I found this, and in reading all I could find about these boats, only a handful were made,
I heard an outboard version is floating around Florida, just wondering if anyone knew who has it ?
To convert to outboard seems like a shame, for historical reasons.
Does anyone sell a crate marine motor, are parts even available for outdrive ???

There was an outboard version in the Upper Chesapeake Bay in the late 70’s. Only saw it once or twice, but it stood out. It was white.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.

Just found out someone near me in Cape Coral splashed one in 1985 and sold them as "Freeland"
going to look at one on Saturday, it's listed in over 20 ft boats for sale.

I was told today that our top F1 boats DAC are built of Mr Jones' designs
All the boats that are being built and designed today are derivative of his basic design," said Chip Hanauer, the winningest active hydroplane driver. "He set the stage technically for what we're doing even today."

Randy Rabe had one w/3 towers on it in the 70's pictured in his archives and Parker was looking for someone to give it a foster home and restore it as part of the deal , not sure if it is the one Lake Trash restored and made it an inboard or not. I knew I could not devote the kind of time required for such a historic undertaking , thats all I got , fun out
most overnite successes usually take at least 10 years

Tunnel Origins
Not true. Jones was a master in 3 point designs (hydros) but Dieter Schulze and Angelo Molinari were responsible for full length air entrapment hulls (tunnels).
Jones' attempt at full tunnels were adaptations of his 3 point designs. His tunnels had far too much deadrise (along with everybody else's at the time). Molinari and Scotti continued with hull refinement for tunnels thru the years where Jones returned to 3 point activity. 3 points can haul the mail in a straight line but can't turn worth a damn, hence the enormous skid fins. Unlimited size'd tunnels have been built from time to time (multi engine outboards and IOs) but couldn't catch the power of turbines. If the unlimited courses had been shortened, the tunnels may have stood a chance in a level playing field.
In the Seattle area we had a "Grand Prix" at the end of the season comprised of the winners in 7 liter 3 points and Mod U outboard tunnels. The tunnels seldom lost.

I had been at the Freeland factory many times. The hull they built was a modded splash from what I remember. Don't know where they got it. (Miami?) Had deep sides, a wide tunnel and was built heavy. Wave crusher type of build. Think they had stern drives at the time. This was in the late 70's early 80's. I still see and drink with George's son on occasion. I will ask him next time I see him.

Yes Freeland splashed the 20 Jones tunnel
Add I offered to pay the guy with the above add and when I said I plan to use the design for a future build, he changed his mind and Is afraid of competition ? really the guy has been trying to sell for two years... OK
And said four years ago he was coming out with a 16 ft version of his 13 ft Biel boat, this guy lived next to the famous Ted Jones

That is Tom's boat. He and his brother keep patching the 280s together. A 450 would make it rip for sure.
