    1978 checkmate predictor s 16' set up and rigging

    Parts I have
    Motor 1989 mercury 150 xr4

    1. 2 hole Mercury CLE coned 2.0-1 gear ratio

    2.cmc power lift 5 1/2 inch hydraulic jack plate

    3. hot foot

    4. trim levers

    5. hydraulic steering

    seeking some help on set up seeking top speed and handling
    what prop ?
    do I need more setback?
    Etc.
    transom seems solid also any ideas on just beefing it up a bit

    just bought the boat tried becoming member of checkmate-boats but seems impossible

    Welcome.

    Sounds like' you have some decent stuff for setting up your boat.

    I'm not familiar with your hull, so this will be generic info. Hopefully someone that has some first hand knowledge with your boat will come forward.

    In order to optimize a coned lower, typically the propshaft would be near flush to the bottom of the boat. This usually requires a propeller in the range of 26-28p to maintain the correct rpm range for a fishing engine. Props like a merc chopper, or mazco re might get you in the ballpark.

    I would think that 6" to 8" of setback would be a good place to start.

    As for the transom, typically knee braces are a good idea if you dont have them.
