Coil mount for lightweight cowl
I am going to be putting a lightweight cowl on one of my 2.5 200's. I am not sure if it is going to be the EFI or the carb. But either way I am going to have to mount the coils so they will fit under the cowl. Both motors were originally CDM ignition. But both have been converted switch boxes. A hi performance exhaust cover is just ridiculously expensive. I could get a billet race coil mount plate. But that is still over $100. I have a couple of broken 2.4 2 piece exhaust covers. I cut one up and made it into an adapter plate. I took the 4 studs out of a spare 2.5 exhaust cover and bolted it to the stud holes. It is still very rough. I still need to shape it more and smooth it out and get better bolts. But it is going to work great. I have the rest of the 16 amp ignition to use also so mounting the regulators won't be necessary.

Following.....What do you mean you cut up the two piece plate, it seems like you bolted it on to the 2.5 cover in one piece? Also the 16 does have one regulator so how will that be mounted?

That’s a heck of lot easier than what I came up with. Nice quick effective solution

Perfect I see what u did now, but I was confused by the 80s two piece plate you mentioned i thought u were referring to a watercooled regulator but, what are u saying is two piece about it? I want to do this some day but I will also need the tabs for the cowl hanger, i see u r using a skirt plate with your cowl?

May bad I looked at the drawings I see how it is two piece now, you basically cut out the "cover" since the newer 2.0 and 2.5s have the two pieces melted together into one

Yes. some of the older 2.4 exhaust plates are 2 pieces just like the water cooled regulator plates. The first one I cut up I cut all the nubs off the back so it would lay flat on the exhaust plate. But one cover bolt gets in the way. So, I did a second one and left the nubs on the back to provide clearance for the bolt head.

I did some more work on my coil adaptor plate. Looks much better now. First, I covered the exhaust divider with packing tape as a mold release agent. Then put a little grease on the bolts and bolted my plate back in place. I took JB Weld and stuffed it under the plate to close in the sides and make it more solid. I let it cure overnight. then unbolted the plate and peeled it off the divider. I came off easily. Packing tape works great as a release agent. Then I used a long bench belt sander and sanded the sides flat. Redrilled and countersunk the bolt holes to make everything lie flat. Almost looks like it's factory now. If you didn't know better. I also cleaned up the casting on the divider. It was really bad.

Just bought an older coil exhaust plate from ebay for 30$ so well see what I can come up with. Using all the spare parts I have Id like to get a fat block 200 under a clamshell style cowl
I'll see if I can stack the two regulators on top in place of one of the black boxes
Also if I can keep most of the older plate together maybe use the existing brackets for shorter rubber isolators,
?
Besides grinding the middle part, do you think you can drill out all the holes to a larger size? So you can get the older plate over the newer one

I don't know. I think it's going to be tough to get a split cowl to fit on a fat block correctly. There is not a lot of space between the coils and the cowl mount bracket to play with. You might have to fabricate your own bracket to attach the cowl mount bracket to the exhaust cover. If the bracket doesn't line up right, either will the cover. Are you sure a fat block will even fit under a clamshell cowl? Aren't the blocks a little wider? I have a couple extra bucket cowl sets if you want one.

No sir. The lightweight formula cowl I have is about 1 1/2" wider than an installed clamshell cowl. But that is because it has to drop on, so you need some extra room. With the clamshell cowl you put it on open. Then kind of pinch everything together as you close it. I might still fit.
