    new half marathon record

Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo ran a half marathon in 56:42 yesterday, demolishing the previous world record by 48 seconds. Kiplimo averaged about 4:19 per mile over the race.

I can't comprehend running that fast that far. I think in my 20's I could have done a 5 minute mile. I used to race at 6 min mile rate for 5 km races. I ran 6 1/2 minute miles for the only 10K I ran. At 60, I ran 8 minute miles for a 5 km run, LOL. Now I have an arthritic hip and will never run a race again.

4:19 miles, repeat 13 times. Oh my.

My diet is actually quite good, except I eat too much chocolate.

My hip is an interesting thing, at least for me. When its bad, I feel pain in my leg, generally in the quad muscle. I went to a sports medicine doctor and she said it was probably referred pain from hip arthritis, and that she had a sure fire test to validate her theory. She arranged a cortisone shot in my hip. I was pain free for 6 weeks, and then it wore off. But this validated her diagnosis. She then suggested physiotherapy, so I went to the local therapist. The physio gave me a routine of stretching and strengthening. I have been doing 45 minutes of strength work 3X a week, and a bunch of stretches twice a day for a year and a half. Normally this allows me to walk for an hour, water ski, run 200 meters (better than nothing), and generally do what I want. This winter has been rough. I have been deviating from my exercise program and instead of going to the gym, I have been shoveling vast quantities of snow for my neighbors. It's double whammy as I am doing things that are hard on my hip and not doing the strengthening that helps it.

Back to the topic. 4:19 miles converts to 15 second 100's. For 13 miles.

Which is great for the Ugandan, except the lion can do it in around 5 seconds!
