Tesla’s sales have dropped nearly 60% in January in Germany compared to the same period last year. The same thing is happening throughout Europe.
Earlier this week, we reported that Tesla’s sales crashed throughout all European markets in January.
The two main reasons are believed to be the introduction of the new Model Y and the disapproval of Tesla CEO Elon Musk and his meddling in politics, which is especially not appreciated in Europe.
At the time, we didn’t have the number from Germany, but now we do.
Ruters reported that Tesla’s sales were down 59.5% in January:
German road traffic agency KBA’s website on Wednesday showed the number of newly registered Tesla cars fell 59.5% to 1,277 in January, while the overall German market was down just 2.8% at slightly more than 207,000 vehicles during the month.
This is undoubtedly a Tesla problem because the German auto market was down just 2.8% in January, and the battery-electric market was up 53.5% during the period.
These are now Tesla’s sales in Europe in 2025 compared to 2024:
Country Jan-25 Jan-24 % YoY
Germany 1,277 3,150 -59.5%
UK 1,293 1,581 -18.2%
France 1,141 3,118 -63.4%
Netherlands 926 1,610 -42.5%
Norway 663 1,109 -40.2%
Spain 269 1,094 -75.4%
Sweden 394 730 -46.0%
Denmark 451 763 -40.9%
Portugal 380 551 -31.0%
Total 6,794 13,706 -50.4%
Electrek’s Take
This is pretty nuts. Obviously, Tesla will use the Model Y transition as an excuse, and there’s some truth to it. However, Tesla was transitioning the Model 3 around the same time last year, which also negatively affected 2024 sales.

I've just bought a car in the MY category. The configurator pushes the new model but it's insanely expensive because it includes FSD which doesn't work in Europe. Potential buyers have to push through to find the more reasonably priced old model, but of course it will be visibly old and inferior the moment it arrives.
I chose a 2025 Ioniq 5 which has suspension, HUD, buttons, stalks, radar, sensors, fast charging, relaxation seats etc. for the price of an old MY. The Tesla's main advantage is range, but once the range is "enough" it drops down the priority list.We have invented the world; WE see

Tesla Cybertruck appears to be facing significant sales challenges. After initial hype faded, and over a million reservations turned out to be as real as unicorns, Tesla is now enabling leasing options and free upgrades to move its inventory of the futuristic pickup truck. The company's recent silence on the Cybertruck, even omitting it from their earnings call, speaks volumes about the situation.
Tesla initially projected sales of 500,000 Cybertrucks annually and established production capacity at the Giga Texas for 250,000 units per year. After working through the initial reservation backlog with fewer than 40,000 deliveries, the automaker is now struggling to sell the remaining vehicles. This is a painful contrast between projection and reality, and it raises questions about the Cybertruck's real market appeal.
Tesla pulls out all the stops as Cybertruck sales grind to a halt
To stimulate demand, Tesla introduced a series of incentives. These include discounts, referral bonuses, and even free Supercharging for the vehicle's lifetime. To add to these efforts, Tesla has now introduced leasing options for the Cybertruck in the US, starting at $750 per month. Leasing is far less profitable than outright sales, and it's a sign that Tesla is prioritizing volume over profit margins to move these vehicles. This is a huge shift in strategy - it's an admission that Cybertruck is not really selling.
There are several factors that could potentially influence Cybertruck sales in 2025. The electric pickup truck has become eligible for federal tax credits, which might make it more attractive to buyers. Providing, of course, the tax credit isn't revoked by Musk's favorite President. Tesla also plans to release a less expensive rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version of the Cybertruck later in the year. This could broaden the vehicle's appeal, though the extent of the impact is a bit of a mystery. It is possible it'll be the question of "too little, too late." Additionally, Tesla is offering a $1,000 discount on the Cybertruck through its referral program.
Tesla pulls out all the stops as Cybertruck sales grind to a halt
Tesla continues to grapple with unsold inventory, particularly the high-end Foundation Series Cybertrucks. The company is now offering free wraps, valued at over $6,000. Previous reports indicated that Tesla even removed the Foundation Series badges from some Cybertrucks to market them as regular models, yet more proof that those who wanted a Cybertruck already got one, and no new customers are lining up.
The Cybertruck's current sales performance is a far cry from initial expectations. Industry estimates for 2025 range from a low of 30,000 units to a more optimistic 100,000. Given the current trend, even the lower estimate seems ambitious. The Cybertruck program, compared to Tesla's initial production capacity plans, could be considered a failure. Had Tesla focused on a more conventional electric pickup truck alongside more affordable EV models, the company might be in a more advantageous position today. The Cybertruck is heading for the rocks, and it is just a matter of time before Tesla pulls the plug on it.

There are only so many seats that are going to support a car that you can't (confidently) leave town with, can't tow anything past the county line, and cost what a new Tesla or E.V. SUV does. Now we have other real contenders competing for that market segment as well and offering 0% finance incentives. The numbers will continue to drop as mandates against ICE continue to drop (here in the U.S.). I will say that if I was to buy an EV for a novelty, it would be a Plaid-for those who have not been in one; they are a rocket ship.
Funny how the gardener couldn't say enough good about Elon and or Tesla until his (then hero) joined the common sense team.
