40 amp flywheels red vs black weights

I have heard mention many times there is a weight savings between the two but never saw a definitive answer. I have a black 40amp flywheel part number 271-817632-C1 which weighs 12lb 10oz and a red 40amp flywheel
    part number 4398839 which weighs 10lbs 12oz

They made different variations of the black one too. Some have like twice as many vents in the top as the other. Not sure which came on what.

I did this swap on my current fishing motor for the 2lb weight savings.

Good info for people searching the web like I did.

I spun my black one up to 7200 last time out. Thats getting scary for a cast piece weight savings aside I wouldn't run a cast flywheel or balancer on any race car motor I built at that RPM either. The flexplate aspect of the red one is a substantial step up in safety at higher RPM. The 2lbs is nice too

I have 5 or 6 black ones now I just grabbed one that was handy for this test hence the part numbers so I dont offer any conflicting info. I've been bit by that before thinking I had bought a unicorn part when it turned out to be a doppelganger pos lol

That's why my new motor will be running a 16amp Mercury racing aluminum I got from 25two.stroke

same. I’m building a 260 ported FF laser with a 7 petal front and a 16amp lightweight set up. My current motor will become the back up when I get this built. I’m hoping to have the powerhead built by spring but we all know how these plans and schedules like to be at odds with one another lol

what are you going to build?

It's already built and just sitting on the workbench. It's a standard 200 with some port work and cut heads. Still using carbs.

That my plan too, just need to swap these powerheads eventually, keep my current as a good running backup.
