    Seastar steering

Im in process of putting together hydraulic steering on my rig , i got the ram and it's rated for 1500psi, my question is does anyone run the helm that's rated for 1000psi in 2.0 or 1.7. Or is 1000psi just not strong enough?

that 1500 is just burst capacity. to reach 1000 psi, you would have to crank that wheel so hard over, your dash would probably fail first. during normal operation,if you see your lines actually move, from pressure, than the 1500 lines might tighten steering up slightly.1000 rating is fine.

My feelings are when it comes to steering it’s best to buy the strongest possible option. Maybe a small risk but if any of that let’s go at full song? Yikes

my local hydraulic shop doesnt service or sell anything over 1000 psi. i have 2, 2.0 boats, great steering. my skater18s needed a faster response, i[ put in a 2.6 uflex helm, i can see a big difference with the high ratio[on the trailer] 3.1/4 turns, lk to lk. not good if you have high steering torque! cant wait to try it out.Artk

I do have almost unmanageable steering torque right up to point its gets on pad then it loosens up alot , enough torque only way to turn left at all is let off gas. I guess that's how the question came about in 1st place, and I want atleast 2.0 helm

I replaced my SeaStar steering cylinder and brackets with a Pro Hydraulic steering cylinder and brackets, on my Allison. The Seastar cylinder was faulty even after rebuilding it. The ProHydraulic kit is rated for 700 hp. I used the same Seastar helm the Allison had on it when it was rigged in 1987. Night and day difference in steering torque. Basically now there is none with the 260. I can't say enough about the ProHydraulic unit . . . . a direct replacement for SeaStar., but much beefier.

your not going to be happy till you get rid of some of that torque, steering is not the cure, been there.

Pretty sure it's a 2.0. Been about three years since I did it and the boat's in a shop right now having a cosmetic repair done, so I can't go look. Almost positive it's a 2.0.
