    400r stearing

What are people using to steer these big outboards, the factory merc rack and pinion steering? I was looking at a standard 400 on a pontoon and mounting a SeaStar type looks unavailable. Are the R's different

My 450R has the same steering as you can order the 400 with. I run the seastar pro helm right to the 450R steering. If I was putting the motor on a pontoon I would run the merc power steering setup. It is great for that application.

Mercury steering ram, 400R's have a different part number for the kit because they use bigger bolts for strength. Or the newer option is you can go fully electric, (steer by wire and gear driven), which I've heard is amazing for pontoons and center consoles.

I would be putting a 400r on a 21 Eliminator Daytona. But when I stand on the back of my 300x and add my 230 pounds it makes the boat sit mighty low in the water. I am not sure going from 14 inches setback to 8-10 inches will make allot of difference.

That is interesting a Sea Star helm will work with the merc steering. If I do this i will be on my own because no one else in the area is doing this.

Being that you are putting it on a padded cat, stick with the 400R factory power steering system, you'll be fine. Make sure you get the newest HD pump system. It will be a 4 hose system to the helm. It's a great system. I hope you are not trying to put a non R 400 on that hull.....

I’m guessing that you are referring to installing an L6 supercharged 2.6L 400R, not the 5.7L V10 400R?

Both Petey and I had L6 400R’s on our 23 Daytonas, so a bit bigger than a 21.

Here’s mine with 8” of setback:

No, it will be the v10 if I do it. They hung 2 2.5, s on them. Why can't we get merc to build a 400 hp v8 and with a 15-inch shaft. They would sell one. I was looking at a v6 4 cycle and the exhaust came out the top, it wouldn't be hard to plumb up a turbo to that add 15 lbs. of boost and turn it in to a 600r.

I never in my life thought I would see a company that calls an engine a race engine that runs on 87 octane, how about 93.

Ugg. You would be better off getting a bigger hull for that platform. Not sure which version of the 21 Eliminator you have....I've had both SC and NA R series motors, and they are incredible. By all means, I recommend you do exactly what you want and see how it works out for you.
