Nosecone CLE or Stock
I have been running my 1989 17' Checkmate, 2.5 200 with a 1.87 lower with a nosecone for the LWP. The boat is not fast enough to really need a nosecone. But I do need the LWP. Carrier nut threads are stripped so the case is junk. I need to replace it. I have another 1.87 gearcase that is good, but it's pretty beat up. The skeg is really worn and has a big chip out of it. It had a nosecone, but it came off, so, it has no water pickup holes. It either needs a new cone or a transom mounted pickup. I had a Bob's transom pickup handy, so I tried it with that. I picked up around 4MPH. Which is great, but I really don't like the hose dangling off the back. And I am pretty sure I felt the transom step to the right at speed a little because the skeg is so small. I also have a really nice, like new, empty, 4-hole CLE case. with a big, cambered torque skeg. If I build the CLE, will that slow me down like the nosecone is? Its shorter than a coned case so it should have less drag. Anyone know which is faster? A CLE or a stock case. And will everything from a stock case transfer into the CLE case? Thanks

It probably won't slow you down as much as the nose cone unit that you had. Why do you need a coned lower unit? If your boat won't run at least 80 MPH you are probably not going to gain anything. There seems to some things that are not known about your post. More information will surly help others chime in on this.

I know I don't really need a nosecone. I am not really going fast enough to need one. But I do need a low water pickup. I run with the propshaft level with the pad. I don't like the hose hanging off the transom from a transom mounted water pickup. The CLE case has the water pickups under the propshaft. But is not as long as a coned stock case. Plus, it has a really nice big torque skeg. After last weeks adventure of complete propeller blowout at less than 70mph with the beat up gearcase mentioned above. (See my photos and video post "Blowout at around 69mph") I realize how important it is to have a nice smooth hydrodynamic gearcase.

Run it as is first see how you like it and if it’s too squirly add a cone after. Lots of stories of CLE’s blowing out around though. Adding the cone may not yield the fastest result but it will be safer

CLE's become troublesome over 85 MPH because at 16" long it's just too short. If you're not planning on exceeded that speed then just run it stock.

The other thing about CLEs is that they are all very old and the prop shafts can break. There is a CLE propshaft on the lake bottom near here, with a nice Hoss Triton on it.

My CLE case is empty. I am hoping I can transfer everything from a standard case. I have a bunch. I am going to make sure to closely examine everything. I was about to install and try this case out when I noticed the propshaft is cracked and about to split in half. Attachment 537491
