GM selling car owner's data via OnStar to insurance companies
GM is selling driver data to insurers without consumers' knowledge, Texas AG alleges - CBS News
I don't think anybody here is surprised, but this really is scummy. I realize these days that our cars are constantly datalogging who-knows-what telemetry constantly, and with more cars having a persistent data connection, they're little different than the way cell phones collect data.
I really hope there is a lot of pushback against what GM is doing, and I'm also sure that GM is not the only culprit here.

Surprised there isn't a consent clause buried in the sales document, proprietary equipment and such, especially in a lease agreement. And if this seems outrageous to you, hold on to your hats when you find out what your handheld devices and Alexa are doing. If this actually brought down rates for good driving, I'd support it. But it won't. It will just release them of any liability.
Rather than go this route, I wish the manufacturers would mandate shutting down all user interfaced electronics with the exception of critical function while driving. As a motorcyclist, it's infuriating to see damned near everyone staring at their phone, or even worse now, their screen on the dash. But this will never happen. Hell, even motorcycles come with all that gizmo gadgetry bull**** now.

Our data needs to be private by default. Any data for sale needs to be opt in and really at that point a cut should be shared. It is US that they are selling after all, why are we not allowed to set our own rates and get paid for our data?

I'm pretty sure Android Auto is doing the same thing, if you use it to connect your phone to your car.

Every company you deal with, every product you buy is selling your info one way or another. You have ZERO privacy. All this hi tech "comfort/convenience" has a price. Enjoy. RR

Our individual identities are personal and if being scraped and sold this is a violation upon individual copyright. Under the right of publicity this is illegal because it is being taken against our will and commodified and sold without our knowledge. A brutal violation of powers

A friend took her car in to her dealer for service, they gave her a brand new car for a loaner! I'm thinking that's quite a sales pitch.(possible new car sale) While driving down the road, her loaner car told her that she shouldn't be texting while the car was in gear going down the road! No they are not watching you!

The most famous study on this was by Mozilla late last year. Almost all the OEMs are selling data
https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/pr...d-for-privacy/
They rated OEMs from bad to worse. Tesla was the worst.
