I have heard the Yamaha route is cheaper and its a great powerhead. More work/effort as you need to mod the lower or adapt a sporty lower to the Yamaha to run it up high.

300R. Buy with warranty, turn the key and go. The other option just be ready to spend money to make it more like an old merc.

i waited a couple of days hoping to see more opinions but heres mine.
if you have the money, or dont mind financing, the 300R is the better option. bolt on an go, dont worry about it . you'll have the merc everyone wants and resale value in the future would probably higher.
if you dont have the money, or you dont want to finance, the tuned SHO is the cheaper, more progressive route to a engine that can be made equivalent to the merc imo.
I went the tuned SHO route for those reason.
so i picked up a 2016 200 SHO model. if, like me, you had a merc previously, you'll need a yamaha boat harness OR a pigtail harness that plugs on the oem merc boat harness directly to the yamaha harness plug ( cant remember the par number) around 250$
then you'll need the tune (1000$)
solid mounts ( a powerhead gasket) and bronze bushings for the mid ( 500-800$)
fat propshaft with billet carrier (1200$)
you can have your flywheel lightened and rebalanced by hydrotec (800$)
a aftermarket nose cone would be needed to replicate the merc lower unit runnig height and efficiency (1500$)
91 octane fuel is recommended with the nizpro tune.
**prices in usd**
another cool feature of the yamaha, is if like me, you tinker yourself on your stuff, you can buy the service manual and yamaha diagnostic system (YDS) program that you install on a basic laptop to monitor and diagnose your potential problems for about 100$. no need for a expensive scanner or dealer trips if problems occurs.
personnaly out of all of that, i only have the tune and the fatshaft upgrade(new this yr). i re-drilled the water pick ups lower to get more engine height but a nose cone is in my future. as of now i'm 4mph slower then with my 300X but i'm confident i'll be able to regain those mph with different props and seat time alone. its also 2X better on fuel and a oil change equals the price of 2 gallons of premium plus when comparing to my old X motor.Last edited by mistah_max; 04-26-2024 at 07:34 AM.

And the lower units?
I understand for surfacing applications, the sportmaster is wise, but for offshore fishing on a heavy boat will they hold up,We have invented the world; WE see

Nizpro is making 600 HP out of the sho. Once Maocury farmed out to the communists they completely lost me. **** that company.

Yeah that Nizpro is great on a dyno. Lol. By all means have a chat with anyone in the US who has the SC Nizpro, see how honest that experiment went. This is why you don't see any on boats that put miles on.
It's great that 108 won't run mercury cause some parts are sourced overseas. He must be Amish. His wisdom is to buy a fully built overseas outboard from the last country we declared war against, and that bombed US soil. Then order more overseas parts that have no reliability in consumer use. 108 you are brilliant.Last edited by Speed Jr.; 04-28-2024 at 07:10 AM.

I agree where are the real world speed numbers on the supercharged Yamaha? Something tells me it breaks lowers, mids, and pistons. We would call a setup like that a "dyno queen". Not to mention its the same weight as a 450-500R with the charger so why?

Lower unit hold up well with the fatshaft upgrade.
A Guy 5min from me has the supercharged version running on 100 octane on a 21 cougar. Nothing touches it, period.
Theres another one on a 22 cougar in Québec. 1 on a checkmate in Ontario. Its a stellar option imo. The merc will always be the preferd option. But they are out there and they work well

Talked to a couple people in Florida that were well over the 1200 hour mark on the niz. Had nothing but praise for them.
