    Replacement Helm Question

Hi all, plan on replacing my seastar helm because of a couple issues but want to make sure I get the correct replacement, as it doesn’t have any numbers on it. The ram is a seastar HC5345, motor is a 200proxs on a paramount type boat. Any advice would be appreciated for a replacement helm. Thanks in advance!

see how many turns it takes to go lock to lock, match that # to the replacement. my new uflex 600$ helm sucks.

2.0 pro helm is what I use with the 5345 cylinder. It's tight and has a quick ratio. Have 3 boats set up like this. Real nice feel to it.

The bigger the number on helm, the less turns lock to lock. The number is displacement of oil in 1 full turn. 1.7 is common, easy to find. Bigger helm steers faster but more effort. Smaller helm and you will be winding wheel like crazy just to stay straight…. On these lil boats with big motors a bigger helm may be the hot setup.

I have a 2.4 helm in my Checkmate. It is easy to turn the wheel and has a very quick ratio. About 3.5 turns lock to lock.

Different animal than a 22. Higher hp needs more helm power. Higher boat mass also needs more helm power.

It's a SeaStar Pro helm. It's rated for 350 horsepower. My left shoulder is completely shot. Torn rotator cuff, bicep tendon, snap tendon, and labrum. I can barely lift my arm above my head. I can still steer without much problem. I notice no difference in steering force standing still or going fast. No torque feedback at all. And his 200 ProXS isn't much different than my 2.5 200. Although I am pretty sure his Paramount type center console fishing boat is much slower than my little checkmate.
