    2.5 280 Break in??

I just freshened up my 280. I reused my mercury pistons as they had no scuff's or wear. Diamond honed, new mercury rings and bearings.

What type of oil should I use and at what ratio for break in? I have heard that the Mercury racing oil was to slippery to use for break in. Not sure?

How many hours and what kind of RPM should l run at for the best results?

    Thanks in advance!!

    Stoney

I've had decent success running Dino oil 32/1 for 6 hours before I started to lean on it.

Yes, they have been. I'm putting together a 260 with 1 new steel sleeve and all new rings.
How should we break in non fishing motors.

IMO if it has one new steel sleeve needs break in as a steel engine. That can also change with clearance and what piston is in it. I can tell you the ported S3000 Greg and I use to run at the enduro were run on the ramp for 1 hour with slight increase in rpm every 15 minutes after a full heat cycle. I would also control water flow during this to raise and lower block temps. We then ran them another 30 minutes on the water at 5000 or less then 15 minutes with short bursts to WOT. Prop tests and would generally start the race with 2.5 hours total time on new Wizard pistons and rings.

In my opinion the load on the engine is most important. I’d put a big wheel on it and back it in deep on the trailer and spend a couple 10 minute sessions there. Watch the temps close and keep the rpm between 2000 and 4000

Never broke in any of my 2.5 Nic motors (260/280/300) with only doing rings and bearings. Just ran a few miles to come to temp and then let it eat. Always ran Klotz oil and never had a issue with rings seating.

What I ultimately wound up doing for my 280 break in of new rings and bearings was I used a 32 pitch 4 blade prop and put the motor under a load and varied the rpm. I also used double Blue dino oil.

    1'st hour under 3500 rpm's varying the rpm's

2nd hour under 4500 rpm varying the rpm's

3rd hour under 5000 rpm varying the rpm's

Second tank of gas I ran my red Mercury racing oil at 5 oz per gallon.

Keeping the rpm's under 6000 rpm.

That may be over kill but I feel good about the process.

    Thanks Stoney
