From what I'm reading, that's the second owner's garage, 12inch and powerheads

"I have an opportunity to buy my dad’s old boat (STV) River rocket"

Obviously, a serious racer, an well organized .

I've never seen hydraulic steering with a 12-inch,..have you?

I saw that about hydraulic and second owner. I don't know enough to say whats best 12 inch or 15 inch. I just see a nice set up and would not be in any hurry to reconfigure.
I have driven boats with all types of steering. I like the cable, pulley with wing plates the best on a small light fast boat.

You know that as you raise and lower a cable steering motor and high trimming, the cables tighten or loosen up.

I drove in the 1982 St Louis MVP race, It's a short course and 20 some boats. Summerford was still running the V bottom, you got right behind him, and you got a cannon of water, So I was told to lower my motor because the water was a mess, my rookie year,
So my helper disappeared, and I backed myself into the water and I then realized my steering was now crazy loose,

Good luck converting that mid to hydraulic steering.

Another reason, have some people with you, and a cooler and come to a quick stop, the wave is now coming for your motor, at least they don't have saltwater in Nebraska to cover your motor

Yeah the current owner is a Champion and I’m pretty sure the boat was used for mainly racing. Not really what I’m looking to do with it at this point in my life, but maybe down the road. I would rather keep the setup like it is but from my understanding with the 12 inch mids it’s not just throw on the gear case/power and go? Arent there some modifications needed?

Yeah I would like to keep it the way it is. Not sure if modifications are needed with the 12inch mid.

keep it the way it is set up now. mods are MINOR. SPACER/ADAPTER needed for gearcase bolt pattern and shortened drive shaft. powerheads should fit. the 12" mid will handle better due to the lower c/g. good luck.
