I believe astronaut (Chuck Yeager) wrote about some of this stuff in his memoirs talking about the early days of the space program and how they would have them doing crazy stuff, crashing experimental planes, doing centrifuge tests etc. and sometimes getting hurt. Yeager also piloted the X-15 that went a little higher and faster than he meant to. He actually flew 6.4 times the speed of sound and 60 miles hi. This was in 1959 The guys were all heros and some gave their lives in horrific ways. There were 7 original astronauts. I have read several of their books. A good read as they were all real sports and had some real wild times! The operations were all top secret so they didn't think the public had the right to know, same as today.
