    Hello,

Exciting project you've got there with the 18ft action/motion marine speed boat! Choosing the right engine setup is crucial for performance and efficiency. Here are a few considerations:

    1. **Mercury vs. OMC V8:**
Both Mercury and OMC (Outboard Marine Corporation) have their pros and cons. Mercury is a well-established brand known for reliability, while OMC V8 setups can offer a unique and powerful alternative. However, OMC faced financial difficulties in the past, and sourcing parts for older models might be challenging.

    2. **Fuel Efficiency:**
As you mentioned, V8 engines are typically more fuel-consuming than V6 counterparts. If fuel efficiency is a significant concern, you might want to lean towards a Mercury V6 setup. This could provide a good balance between power and economy.

    3. **Maintenance and Parts Availability:**
Consider the availability of maintenance services and replacement parts for both Mercury and OMC engines. Mercury, being a popular and widely-used brand, may have better support in terms of servicing and parts availability.

    4. **Performance Requirements:**
Define your performance requirements for the boat. If high speed and power are your priorities, a V8 engine might be more suitable. However, if you're looking for a balance between speed and fuel efficiency, a Mercury V6 could be a better fit.

    5. **Budget:**
Evaluate your budget for the entire project, including the engine. Mercury engines might be more expensive upfront, but their reputation for reliability could save you money in the long run.

    6. **Talk to Experts:**
Consult with marine mechanics or professionals who specialize in boat engines. They can provide valuable insights based on your specific boat design and usage requirements.

    7. **Consider Warranty and Support:**
Check the warranty and support options for both Mercury and OMC engines. A reliable warranty and good customer support can make a significant difference in your overall experience.

In the end, it's a balancing act between power, efficiency, reliability, and budget. Carefully weigh these factors and perhaps test ride boats with different engine setups if possible. Best of luck with your marine speed boat project!

Why does it have to be a v8 OMC? The v6 3.0 and 3.3 OMC engines are capable of plenty of power if ported and tuned by capable hands. Plus they sound awesome and are lighter and not as tall as the v8.

AJ, I like the way you think. They do sound awesome. Fuel is a small fraction of the cost, The initial buy-in for an omc is a lot less, so there is that. What ever setup you choose will be great. Have fun and let it rip
