Mercury 200HP 2.4L XRi
There is a 200hp 2.4 XRI for sale in my area. I cant find much about these motors. Are they any good? Whats their history?
Is this the same engine as the 220 laser?
It is very clean, has 700 hours says the owner.

Good motor. Verify even compression. If you buy convert to premix if not already done. Probably a good idea to replace the reed valves at this age and if funds available some new electrics cant hurt. New German switch boxes and a new quality stator. Clean the injectors and give an overall check over. If all that is done and good it should last a good long while. If funds not available for all this then cross fingers and run it

2.5 is stronger but its a different motor.. not only tha chrome vs. tha steel but its a "behind tha liner" (main reason for better performance) ported motor where tha 2.4 is a "piston ported" motor.. tha XRI is basically tha same as tha 220.. biggest difference is tha XRI has tha stupid water cooled 40 amp stuff (only produced 3 yrs) where tha 220 laser had tha proven 16 amp stuff.. tha water cooled is fine as long as it works like it should, but is known for its problems (over heating).. parts (stator, combination reg/rec) for it are expensive.. tha other only downside is tha older analog ecu.
but over all, other than tha 40 amp junk, an XRI is a solid motor..
jus one more thing... if it ain't broke don't jack with it. other than normal maintenace......... jmoLast edited by tlwjkw; 09-19-2023 at 08:49 PM.

Absolutely i didnt mean to say it was better by any stretch just not a bad motor. I forgot about those water cooled regs ive never had one. Its obvious that 2.5>2.4>2.0 i just don’t think any of them are bad. They’re all good, heck i loved my old 135 2.0L too.
