In the photo is my Dad and me going duck hunting in his Jon boat. Decades later, a few years before he passed away, he wanted me and my nephew to go fishing with him in the Ocklawaha River east of Ocala Florida.
We are idling down the mainstream, before we go fishing inside the swamping canopy of trees. When we did go fishing, I had to cast side-ways and underhand because of the overhanging tree limbs (see the attached photo of Florida river trees.
Before we pulled into the canopy of trees to fish, I saw one of the largest Gator heads, that I ever saw, in the middle of the stream.
And the 13-foot Gator caught near Orlando, reminds me of that gator in Ocklawaha. I remember thinking to myself, I do not want to fall out of this Jon boat, with that gator only 80 feet away.

I agree with you about Cottonmouth/Water Moccasins they are worrisome. At least with rattlesnakes they let you know, by rattling their tail, you are approaching their striking range. And I have killed a few rattlers with a hoe.
The biggest rattler I dispose of was heading towards our house, I was probably 12 years old. Our family of six pulled out of the driveway onto the highway, and there was a 6-footer on the asphalt heading to our house. Dad turns the car around goes into the house. He brings out the smaller 410 shotgun.
He instructs me to get on the hood of the station wagon. He hands me the 410 and a shotgun shell. Dad eases the car out on the highway and tells me to load the gun and shoot its head-off. I load the gun and aim. And my Dad says Wait!!!
Wait until its Head is off the road and in the grass. I did as I was told, and we left the rest of the carcass on the road. And Dad commences to driving to town. Life in central Florida.

Regarding the murky waters of the Saint Johns River. Some of that murkiness is due to the farmers fertilizer runoffs into the river. The access fertilizer feeds algae bloom. In the 1960s, I remember you could see down 3 to 4 feet down in Palatka (that area has tidal effect). But now in the Palatka farming area east of St. Augustine those river waters are 1 to 2 feet visibility at best.
