    Mercury 60r

There is a Merc 60r advertised.
It comes stock with a 2.
    33:1 gear ratio.
This must be the fishing/ sking option.
Will this motor take other Merc boxes with higher ratios?
We are currently taking steps to change some of our class rules to get more 3 and 4 cylinder outboards on our race circuits and it would be great to see this motor out there

Wave to Wave has an article comparing the 60R to the Formula Race 60 on the Tuff 16. The 60R went 54 and the handling suffered with the soft mounts. The Formula went 64.

Yeah the big gearcase on the 60R can be swapped for the smaller 3.5" gearcase with 1.83 gears. TwzteD on here did it among some others.

Why would mercury put a 2.33 box on a 6300rpm motor?
Here are my numbers for a light boat running a 19p prop with zero slip.
    6300÷2.33=2703rpm at the prop
    2703x .480m(19inch)= 1297m/min
    x60 and you get 78kmhr or 48mph
Why is there an r on this motor when those numbers will never win a race

It's a marketing department sham. Especially since it's basically the same turd powerhead since 1999 or so.

They said it was designed for the fishing skiffs that need a good holeshot in shallow water. And that makes sense but the R badge was dishonest.

What you would do better with is the formula race version. Same lame powerhead but solid motor mounts, wing plates and it already has the normal gearcase. Assuming they're still available.

Here are some pic of what we race.
We are looking to modify our small boat rules so as to accommodate smaller motors and boats.
I currently race a 19ft boat and an eleven fter.
The plan is to race a 15ft T850 type boat running a omc or yamaha triple, unrestricted.
There are moves to increase the motor choice to 140hp 4 cylinder stock.
The larger classes of outboard racers are dominated by merc and the smaller classes by omc
One of these types of motors with a 1.6 or 1.8 type box would go well.

    Yes.
I've got a 15inch stinger and hustler I'm restoring but they are too valuable to race.
Whatsmore, you need to be a skilled motor mechanic to salvage the corroded old 49 and 56 cube motors to keep the omc motors alive.
We need a turn key motor or motors so that a person can pay the money get the boat

I’m running a 60R on a Havoc 1553, I’ve been thinking about swapping gear cases. Here is what I get out of the props I run on it. Each prop still has a little left in it, still getting used to a fast tiller boat.

    -Mercury 19p Spitfire X7 4 blade 46.5 mph @ 6,040 rpm
    -Hill Signature 14x19p 3 blade semi cleaver 50.5 mph @ 5,960 rpm
-Hill Signature 14x23p 3 blade over hub semi cleaver 61 mph @ 5,310 rpm - This prop is a handful to run but it would turn it no 6k+ problem.

There is a problem with that 23p semi cleaver speed.
    At 5310rpm a 23p prop at 0 slip will do 50mph.
    That's if the box is a 2.33 to 1

The 19p at 6040 is running at theoretical 0 slip at 46.5mph or very little slip

Variables here is that 23p run was recorded in the cold winter in a spill well, could have had some current but I don’t remember. The 19p run was in the heat of the summer 90 degree day in a lake with no current.
