Fuel pump mount casting on old 2 stroke merc blocks

Curious- why did crossflow merc blocks 4 and 6 cyl - have an extra fuel pump mount casting? Was this simply because the blocks were initially cast for 2 cly and then when moulds were created for 4 and 6 cly- simply duplicated 2 for 4 and 3 for 6?
I suspect a cost saving measure but he’ll what do I know?
were the extra fuel pump mounts ever fitted with pumps on any engine?

Mark 30 used 2 pumps...... might have been because of the small bore......not a lot of perssure in the crank case. ....Maybe just a casting thin or just for future hp thoughts........
