new 3 wire trim sender
a friend just bought 150 4 stroke merc. on center console, no trim gauge. I installed one and found sender wires cut at clamp bracket still won't work when connected again! can someone walk me through how the 3 wire sender works!

You likely have a smartcraft trim sender in the 150 and you bought an analogue trim gauge.
Buy the right sender for the gauge and hook it up...it will work. The analogue and the digital trim senders are not interchangeable and they also do not use the same plugins on the front of the engine.

There should be a converter from the digital trim to the analog trim. Motor receives digital signal, and you need a converter to make it analog. p/n 8M0059529

Yep, you can go that route too.

What sender is it you are using if you want to swap the senders as you mentioned? I wasn't aware that would work, but I've never tried to make that work either.

I don't know where they are from, I just have them laying around here. They look identical, so you just have to go by the color of the wire on the sender. Analogue senders are purple brown and black while digital have a yellow wire.

I have 5 volts at harness purple so I guess this is a digital setup! I'll check the gauge he purchased! still don't know why harness was cut when purchased and no trim gauge ever installed in dash!
