2005 Mercury 250 XS Maintenance
I just obtained a 2005 Mercury 250 xs motor that I want to make sure the maintenance is up to date!
First off I will be replacing the air pump with a new one!
I'm going to assume that I need the Fuel and Air injectors cleaned and inspected! Who clean's and inspects Opti injectors?
What other maintenance should I have done on this motor, It looks to be very clean and having the hours pulled here soon!

Thermostats, belt, impeller, fuel filter, pulse pump diaphragms, spark plugs, inspect the poppet valve and check the water strainer in the adapter plate for debris.
Blake at Canadian Injector Service does top notch work on opti injectors.
If the motor doesn't start right up on the first hit after the above maiteneance then plug in a ddt and throttle up through the range to check the tps for bad spots and also check the map with engine off and then again at idle. Reed valves too... glass or carbon reeds don't last forever. Might wanna pull the air plenum off and inspect the reeds. Basic 2 stroke stuff common to all.

Good advice, I second the plugs, pulse pump, poppet and strainer. I have my Sportmaster resealed every year too. The air pump life depends on the supply strainer staying clean like he said. You can index the plugs while you are changing them. It might have made a difference on my 300XS.

What makes you want to replace that compressor? I'd pull it apart, inspect it andput it back together if your worried about it. My 2c.

I've just heard that it was a high failure item and that loosing the air compressor could be catastrophic!
I understand that there is a rebuild kit for the compressor but I'm not sure what is involved?

The original ones were silver, and had a poor design. I have still seen them run up to 1000 hours though. The black ones were redesigned (2 bearing). And are fine. You can replace it if you want but I'd really just inspect it and run it.
The problem with the Optimax is that it is misunderstood, so people throw out random solutions. (Example: motor doesn't run right, so it must be the compressor or tracker valve, without any reasoning or investigation as to why)

Any idea what year engines had the silver and what year Mercury went with the 2 bearing design?
