Merc V6 2 stroke oil pump (alarm) question

The oil pump on the merc v6's (2 stroke) has an sensor attached to it.

Will the alarm sound if the gear is not rotating? Or also when no oil is deliverd to the pump?

What happens if you run the pump dry? Would the alarm also sound due to this sensor?

Offcourse the alarm will sound if the oil level in the tank under the cowling is low, but thats not the question here.

tha pump has a "rotation sensor" thats tied into a switch box to get a signal.. lottsa folks have NO confidence in this part of tha warning... seems like its always too late by tha time it will alarm... if it alarms at all... there is no signal for oil movement and/or present...

JMO.. if ya know tha history of tha motor and if ya know its never been over heated then tha oiler is probably safe.. but if ya don't its a crap shoot.... heat is what kills tha crank gear.................

    Thnx bud,

Reason i ask is because my oiler alarm sounds at higher RPM (+3500rpm at speed). Weird because it started beeping 1 minute after i took in out of winter storage. I always add some oil to my fuel tank, just for the reason the pump fails, and a little bit extra oil never hurts. Never overheated on my watch.

Plastic Gear on the crank is probably on its way out, just delete the oil injection and never worry about lack of oil again.

So do you ever look out at the riverbank and half expect to see sun glint off the barrel of an AK? I joined in 75. Biggest threat then was the shore patrol and weed sniffing dogs…
