    Help Diagnosing Starter Issue

I have a 225 Mercury Optimax that is having an intermittent starting issue.

When you try to start it, the system will click repeatedly and never crank the engine. As if there was a faulty connection somewhere. Then sometimes it will start normally with not issues.

If I hotwire the starter at the engine with a screwdriver, it will always start with no issues so I'm guessing the issue might be somewhere along the cables going to the starter switch.

Is it possible to test at the harness level so I can confirm the issue is in the cabling going to the switch instead of the engine?

Here's a video of the issue:

That seems to have been the issue. I replaced it with another one I had from my old EFI and so far the issue hasn't come up.

Thanks a bunch, guys. It seems obvious in retrospect but I was stuck overthinking it XD

Welp, looks like we just got lucky for a few days with the new solenoid cause the issue is back (Dont you just hate intermittent problems?)

Anyone got any ideas as to what else it could be?

We thought of this but it never fails when we bridge the solenoid directly with a screwdriver.

Id run a continuity test on the yellow / red wire. Don't rule out the key switch either. Should be fairly simple to trace it sown now.

If the problem is before the solenoid in the low amp circuit the solenoid will not click. If you hear solenoid click, it is either the solenoid or battery cable-connector issue. The batt cable can give enough 12 volts to run everything in the boat but not pass enough amps to fire the starter. But most likely culprit will be the solenoid.
