Nitro to Electric conversion questions
Thinking of repowering my Dumas tunnel with the TFL 3660 Outboard. I am new to this electric stuff and had some
questions, hope someone can help.
What would I need for an ESC for that outboard?
Would my “vintage” Futaba AM controller be able to control a new ESC?
What type battery would I need to power that Outboard?
And has anyone bought stuff thru offshoreelectrics.com? I posted the same questions to them via email from their website and got back what seemed like a computer generated response that made no sense and answered none of my questions.
While the Nitro was fun, it’s just not feasible for daily use anymore. Again, I am new to this stuff and am trying to make sense of it, I just can’t wrap my brain around the technical stuff yet.

Usually a 120amp would be fine for that size motor, depending on voltage used. Volts×amps=watts.
Kv of motor, (rpm per volt), is going to be critical when you decide on a battery voltage, and rough prop size.
Your am transmitter will be compatible, but not the best choice for range, interference, and a fail safe shutoff when you lose signal.
Offshore electric is great. I don't know if I could recommend the tfl outboard your looking at. I have one that I've never run, and I don't like the length of prop shaft and the tight radius of the flex shaft. It does look awesome.
My father and I have a whole fleet of tfl mini outboards running on 6s at about 50,000rpm. We do a bit of modification in order to keep the flex shaft in one piece and not lose props when they do break.

Thank you for all the advice and knowledge Onpad. I’ll be sure to post updates on the rigging and how the runs go. It’s been close to 20years since this boats been wet, can’t wait to have some fun with it again!

Motor is mounted. I have to say I am impressed with this thing, at least how it looks and is made. The paint on the cowl is subpar but that can be fixed.
This mount is my 3rd try at using what I have laying around and it turned out lightweight, not pretty but effective (I hope). I have to work on steering next and then electronics.

While the motor bracket isn’t pretty, it is made from some leftover InControl foot throttle roller guides. Fits good with the name on the boat!

Dumb question time. The ESC has 3 black wires to the motor, not
marked and nothing in the instructions. Motor has the 3 wires, colored red, yellow and green. How do you hook it up to the unmarked ESC? Does it not matter what goes where?

Hook it up however, if motor spins backward, reverse two wires.
