    2.4/200 trim solenoid are mounting?

As I rig my 2.4/200 for service replacing an existing 2.0/150, I am asking someone with a dual ram 2.4/200 to take some snaps of how your tilt/trim solenoids are mounted.

This motor came on an older single ram bracket that I won’t be using here. For ease of rigging, I will mount the 2.4/200 powerhead on the existing dual ram mid. But I can’t find in any of my factory Merc manuals, how to mount the solenoids to the powerhead. I’m pretty sure I can rig something myself, but if there is already a known way that everyone does, I’m eager to copy it.

The existing 2.0/150 has them on the air box, but the 2.4/200 has a whole different air box than the 150.

Again, it is good clear pictures that would be most helpful here if possible.

Aren't those solenoids mounted on the pump, in the boat?

Only on the single-ram mid. This will be going on a newer style, dual-ram mid. On the dual ram mid, the motor/pump are part of the bracket.

3 wire or 2 wire trim? Some mount on the coil plate when you have 2 groups of 3 coils on the aluminum plate, or if your motor is older than that then they mount just like you described your 150: on the carb air box plate. If your 2.4 doesn't have the mount screws on the airbox plate then the powerhead was pre 3-ram trim and then there was no place designed to mount them. You may already know everything I just told you, but I just wanted to clarify.

You may have to make some custom plate to mount them somewhere. I like to mount them in the boat even with the 3-ram trim. I just run the wires into the boat with the jack plate wires and then all my solenoids are together and forget about the powerhead.

You have answered my question... Which is that the solenoids for a 3-ram T'n'T go on the air box. Thanks for that.

    So:
    -1990 powerhead 2.4/200 with WH46 carbs
-1983 dressing on it (coils, clamshell cowl, air box, engine-side harness, etc...)
-will be mounted on a 1986 3-ram mid because the boat is already rigged for it

Since the air box will have been from the single-ram era, it probably doesn't have threaded bosses to mount a plate for the solenoids

It has six independent coils, screwed to the 80's style exhaust cover (which is mounted to the 1990 block), which AFAICT, is the common arrangement before the water cooled regulators came around.

I'll either rig up my own mounting plate, or end up doing what you suggested and mount the solenoids inside the boat

Thanks for the input so far.

    -Peter

Clam shell cowls won't allow rear mounting of solenoids. There is only room for coils.

I’ve probably confused you with my hybrid situation. The powerhead is a late 1990 (mid-November 1990 build stamp). But the exhaust divider with coil mounting, clamshell cowls, and everything else are all standard mid-80’s. So I would be looking for the standard solenoid mounting scheme for that era, which 25two-stroke kindly shared.

Yeah, as I believe 1989 was the first year drop-on cowl and last production year 2.4 (maybe 90 was). So in 89 and 90 the motors woulda been 2.4 200s with drop-on and rear (exhaust plate) mounted solenoids. However, hos powerhead is a 1990 but the exhaust divider and cowl are older than 89/90 so that solenoid mounting is out of the question as Jim mentioned: no room back there. So you gotta mount towards the front of the engine.

Here are some pics of an XR2 from that era that is dying in the back yard.

Thanks, Jim. Normally you are correct. However on this 1990 block, the previous owner put a mid-80’s exhaust cover with the threaded bosses for the coils and the spine where the clamshells hinge. Pretty much standard mid-80’s fare.

Having trouble visualizing what you mean by "top front of the motor". Like where this plate is?
