    Can a 30” Yamaha 300 4T lower unit input shaft be cut down to 25” and be resplined ?

    I bought a pair of 30” Yamaha 300 4t lowers for the 4.2L engines for parts but have 25” engines can the input shafts be cut down to 25”. Thanks in advance for any info, RM

    Those have a tapered shaft, so you can't cut and respline. You have to cut the middle out and weld them together.

    who can do that? and what does it cost? How well do they hold up if they’ve been welded? Thanks so much for any info, RM

    I'm not sure who does the work. Maybe phone Chris Carson? Mine is being done up here in Canada. I guess we will find out how well they hold up. The guy who is doing mine mills a nub in one end, and a socket in the other to get a nice fit-up, and then welds them together.

    Decades back I welded up the shaft diameter so splines could be cut in the shaft, this was not on a marine part but the task is the same.
    I used TIG on that job but expect a MIG man with the proper spool of wire can do a sweet job in less time.
    Doing it this way greatly reduces the need to re-straighten the shaft.

    i Can cut and mig it myself. I will give that a shot, thanks
