Wearing a Safety Helmet to go Fishing

I remember the years (decades ago) when a Merc 150 on a bass boat push me 70+ mph, and you didn't think about wearing a race helmet.

I will assume fish have evolved to incredible speeds, and you just need 100+ mph boats to catch those Faster Fish.

I remember hearing a story aboot Chub from Stroker giving somr Allison guys hell because they would take out everything to do speed runs. He said a Stroker did the runs with a 250# driver, and another 250# of gear. When I saw them boys run the Jasper river run, I believed him. It's nuts what they're getting out of these bigger bassers now

My brother-in-law bought a bass boat with a Merc 150.

My sister told me he was scared of the boat (I will assume it was the top--end speed in chopping waters that made him nervous).
He sold the boat.

I mentioned this because of all the guys that have the money, (but not necessarily the skill and/or experience) to safely operate the high-speed fishing boats.
And the rig in this video surely will challenge new boat owners (& me too).

I rarely go faster than 70 but I've been wearing a full face helmet for years to go fishing in the winter time to keep my head and face warm.

Yep....if you ever get caught in a rain storm...those full faced helmets are worth their weight in gold. lol

What kind of helmet is it, motorcycle??? I remember years ago, an offshore racer was always wanting helmets for boat racers that were lighter and smaller then motorcycle helmets??? Bob Nordskog, ha, get those brain cells hummin.

To me its no different than a corvette or a muscle car. People buy those cars everyday that just like to drive them and never push them to their limits. People also buy them that enjoy the looks or the heritage. Many people buy new Bullets and Allison's that never push them to their limits. Other people do push the limits. This site is filled with people who push the limits.

As you know, sitting behind the windshield of a bass boats can be chilly at speed. Especially in the winter when we are chasing numbers. Often the helmet is on just to stay warm. Some people where them for safety. If I'm pushing it I would usually have one on. On the LCB my current helmet gets sucked off at speed, so I usually don't have one on.

A helmet without the proper neck restraints is more deadly than not wearing one. You get pitched out and the helmet scoops water it will break your neck instantly.

When I was still testing and learning how to drive my new build I would throw a helmet on when pushing for a number. These days I think I have a good feeling on how she handles and feel very confidant at speed with the current set up so I rarely put one on for any reason other than to stay warm.

When testing new setups I was running a worked cleaver that ran really loose, hooked it and threw me out of the seat. Helmet saved from bouncing my head off the gunnel.
