I do not in my own boats but probably 30 engines a month I see have issues relating to ethanol/bad gas/water in fuel. That's 40-50% of the boats I work on. Mind you; a small number of those are due to poorly placed/designed fuel tank vents. However, fuel venting issues is probably only 2, at max 4, boats a month.

That’s pretty crazy about so many engines having problems that are water related. Are these motors that are a run for an hour or two and then let sit for six months or are they run regularly?

Water in fuel is a HUGE problem for boats. Most people don't run their stuff enough. I mean here, we only have a couple months of good boating. Boats with for 9 months of the year here.

Ive seen guys fill up at marinas more water than fuel. I had one guy, fresh fill up, his fuel was BLACK. I don't know what was in it, but it was straight from the marina like that.

I agree boats sit too much these days and ethanol fuel pulls moisture from the air. Its amazing how destructive ethanol fuel can be. More often then not boats came in with fuel related issues. I've seen the plating eaten off fuel hi pressure pumps.
No ethanol will ever be used in my new engines. Fortunately ethanol free fuel is available where I boat.

I fill my boat and most every vehicle/ lawn mower from 5 gallon jugs. We are blessed to have pure gas here in mid grade, 89-91 oct
When I buy more locally or away from home and am stuck with Ethanol, I add some water to the gas in the jug.
The water combines with the Ethanol and quickly settles to the bottom as a jelly.
I can then either pour off most of the gas or siphon our either the good or the bad.
Filters can be used to separate the jellied fuel also.
For us that have freezing temps, the water laden jelly freezes allowing you to transfer the gas into anther jug or device, the get the chunk of ice out and process some more.
    Regards,
