220 xri
Is a late 80's 220 XRI 2.4L a good engine if it's in good shape?

"IF" can cover a lotta ground either way!!!.. its an old motor anyway ya cut it.. but if its got a solid base (rotating assy.) it can be as good as any 2.4 200.. tha main weakness of a solid 220 was tha ecu..... they were merc's first attempt at tha v6 efi... customers did a lot of tha R&D for merc (involuntarily)..... jmo.

"good engine" yes
"good engine management system" ... questionable.
Put a set of carbs on that motor and keep your gas clean and it can be a badass motor for the next 10 years if not more.

tha acu is tha secret.. all tha other efi stuff is pretty much tha same.. merc built one ecu in '87/'88 for a laser injected Bridge Port (that some say wasn't built but i had one of tha few) that didn't/doesn't exist/show on any list.. it even had a pot (lean ta rich, vice versa adjust) nob on it.. it worked really well....

Carbs are. And as mentioned above an acu is a big upgrade if you choose to keep it efi. I am not a fan of the temperamental tps or the keihn injectors, but they work. Not as easy of a motor to manage yourself as a carb motor. If you are good with old school fuel injection systems then leaving it efi is fine, but if you are not good with "classic" "basic" efi and don't want to pay a reputable shop to troubleshoot then any issues can make you loose your hair in a hurry. Lots of shops won't touch those efi systems and they do have odball problems occasionally that take thousands of dollars to finally sort out. Carbs are great: once you jet them right all you have to do is keep them clean.
That being said I build way more efi motors than carb...but I know the system pretty darn well and have all of mercury's tools at my disposal.

absolutely!!!.. like said, unless ya get well rounded on tha efi stuff....... they are easier, cheaper, can produce excellent performance and would be my choice with what you're workin' with... was always my choice over "production" laser efi stuff... but keep in mind that you don't see carbs on tha "heavy hitter" race motors............... jmo.

at least the laser won't leanout just one cylinder like the rail system so you know you've got an issue before the grenade goes off!
I use to drill case and dig out the potting on the 2.4'os think the pot adjustment was 2.02 for sea level!

Just starting to look. I have all the parts but power head and cowling, just need to fix 3 boats before I have the time to invest.
