What coil number for a regular 225 opti?

Wanted to replace all the coils on my 225 opti. They are mostly original. Engine serial number shows #8moo77471 as the correct ones. Dealer ordered and I got them. Opened box and the coils were #moo47456. Number on box is the 77471 part. Installed them and engine would not run. Got the old coils back on and it ran fine. My 250 has the #47456 coils on it and they are described as a "multi spark " coil. Of course dealer does not want to take coils back and insists the 47456 are correct. What are the CORRECT coils for an 2009 225 opti ser # 1b780484? All I wanted was to make the engine more reliable. What a mess...... HELP!

200/225/225proXS/250proXS modern engine without coil drivers use coil p/n 8m007471. I open a box with 8m0077471 in it and the coil itself reads:

    3201
    8M0047456
    REV-C

From a new mercury coil manufactured 07/05/2022

You should have the right coils you got from your dealer.

Strange thing is the engine wont run with the 47456. In testing for a possible bad PCU I installed the 250 XS pcu and the darn thing purrs with the 47456 rev c. Replace the 250 pcu with the 225 pcu and it won't run .Install the old coils and it runs great. Darndest thing I have ever seen. Guess I will run the old coils.....

Thanks 25 two stroke for the confirmation. At least I have new coils for the 250 xs. They DO work on it.

Your PCM is either corrupt or you have an odd 1/2 yr or old stock pcm that mercury put on that engine that was not designed for those coils. The PCMs WERE wired differently in the harness plugs even though they will all plug into each other. If you look at the pins themselves in the PCM you may find that the 250 has an extra pin or something that your harness also has but the 225 PCM does not have.

If your pcm checks out good by someone like simeon then it is an issue with the wiring harness not being compatible with the PCM, and for whatever reason the old coils will still fire because they are wired different inside. Your old coils DO supersede to the new coil but mercury did change the coil itself, so when it supersedes the part number it doesn't always mean the part is the same part.

I got a 2nd 225 pcu with the exact same part #'s on it and same thing. I think you are right. Must be a odd thing in the wiring or pcu's somewhere. Luckily, I have several spare coils with the original number. I will just carry a few and replace as they fail... Damn, That's exactly what I was trying to avoid.

The 250 XS PCU will run the 225 reg opti just fine? No lean spots or over advanced timing?

Get a second opinion on this because I am no expert, but I can say I have done it and it has worked...I've switched them all around in a pinch and so has my boss. Never have I seen any issues, but neither can I guarantee there won't be any. I know the XS fuel curve is designed for 10psi higher fuel and air pressure, so the maps are not the same. However, with the regular 225 being down in both then it seems to run ok IMO. The best option would be find a 250 pcm non proXS, but those are not as popular. Keeping the spare coils work, but I hop you got a lot of them cause they sure do like to burn up!

Right now it's running great. I am not gonna touch it. Going to the glades in two weeks. Four of the coils are original parts to the engine. 14 yrs old!

I'd be cautious on the swapping of that PCM to the 250XS. Like 25 said, there is a difference in fuel / air pressure, the air injectors are also differnt. If you go ahead and do the swap, I'd swap the air and fuel regs, as well as the air injectors to be safe. Thats just my opinion.

Bringing this issue back up.....Got some generic coils from DB electrical. Thought they might work. Same crap as the new oem coils. Engine runs rough and stalls. I was thinking a pcu from a newer 225 opti ( mine's an 09 ) like a 2012 or newer should be compatible and have the circuits to fire the new part # coils properly. Other option is to swap the electrics and pcu etc from an older 225 opti I have that's the driver/coil setup. I don't like knowing that I am on borrowed time with the current pcu/coils. If you mix the good old coils with one new one, the new coil get's so hot you can't touch it after running it! WTH is up with that? This thing is a challenge I tell ya!

Man thats a pretty strange issue. IMO, since you have tried swapping PCM with some success, I woud continue down that road. But I would be careful with what you get. You can't put a ProXS or a 250 PCM on with those injectors IMO. You could swap the whole fuel system to a grey injector system which would work. I think you need to do the heads too then, at least on the 2.5L the heads are different from Blue to Grey injectors.

Do you want to just buy some old version coils to have on hand for when the ones on your engine go out? There have to be hundreds of good old coils floating around.

I really want to have new stuff on it. But at last resort, yeah that would do it. Looked for the same #8moo42381 rev A coils that it has currently and no luck. If anyone comes across some def pm me. I don't
know what other old part numbers will work. Injector Service I am looking for a newer year pcu and seem to find very few. Thanks for the replies.

Do the new coils & old coils have the same number of pins in the connector?

You can buy (for a LOT less money) the IGN1A coils with or without internal ignitors.
