Thumbs up Purple Martins are HERE!!!

I saw the first Purple Martin on one of my Martin houses while ago. They always seem to start arriving in late February here.

I think we ought to call it "Purple Martin Month"!!!

I have two 12 room houses up, and another 12 room that belonged to my beloved mother (I took from her house after she passed). I need to buy a piece of pipe and drive it in the ground. Last year both houses were almost full.

I was fixing looking at the Castle! Sold out though!

Miss the barn swallows, mud nest colonies. They just aren't coming back as they once did.
They'd fly inches over the flat glass water, picking bugs, taking water to the nests, dozens of them, just great to watch. Hardly see a pair in the past decade.

I read that as purple martians at first.

We had a Martin house in our back yard as a kid and a trampoline.
Purple Martin's are territorial birds. They use to dive bomb us when we were on the trampoline. I tried to catch them in a crab net but them little suckers are like little aerobatic planes.

We still have them here. Home owners usually run them off because they make such a mess. They are all over in barns and sheds. I had some that nested under the eve of my house and I let them be. They were coming back every hear. We will see.

Considering they eat their weight in bugs everday, they are worth having around.

After the parenting was done and the young had taken to chasing the parents, for a few days to a week they'd all line up on the single power line waiting for the whole bunch to get ready. Then they'd leave, and we wouldn't see them until the next year. Wow can they ever maneuver just inches off the water, then turn high and curve around and down again, miss that show.
