Optimax Oil Tank Question
I pulled a 250xs off a bass boat this past week. The 3 gallon oil tank in the bilge was half full of brownish oil, assuming it was Merc oil. The onboard tank was full of the same oil.
Weird thing is the air side of the tank head where the pressure from the motor would come from was capped. The pick up had oil in it and the screen was clean.
How is the oil getting from the tank to the motor without pressure from the crankcase? It had a remote filler for the oil tank. If the remote filler was vented would the engine make enough vacuum to pull the oil to the motor? Could the owner have been premixing?
I'm stumped.\\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\///

Not sure how it would work short of an additional inline pump. The oil pump on engine would have little draw. The deck fill to tank in bilge comes with a non vented cap.

The brown oil is optimax oil, there should be two hoses on the same side of the tank one oil the other air. The blue line should be oil. I’ve never seen an optimax on premix.

The blue line is the only line coming from the tank. The air side has a cap on it. The motor scans 10.6 hours with more than 6 at idle. The exhaust is black and sticky. It looks like it's been getting plenty of oil.
Like I said, I'm stumped.\\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\/// \\\///

OK so I rode back over to look at the boat the motor came off of. The end of the hose that would normally go to the oil tank pressure side was run up to the back side of this

...so I guess the system was receiving pressure from the motor through the oil filler hose.

Never seen that either, when you rig it on your boat I would put it back the way it should be

Yes. Put the 2 lines straight to the oil tank. Pull the pickup out of the oil tank and check the screen on the bottom of the pickup while you're at it.
Optis can't run on premix because the compressor wouldn't get oil...

I had a 1992 2.0L Mercury that I purchased new from a dealer on a new Baja. Thie first day out during the break in the low oil alarm went off so I added a little oil to the remote tank to silence the alarm thinking perhaps the system just needed to fill itself. When I took the boat out later that day I took it to another dealer (closer) and he popped the cowl and showed me that the oil injection was improperly hooked up - you guessed it...the pressure side.

The pressure side, from the motor, hooks up to the remote fill. It hooks to the vent side and pressurizes the tank from there.

Correct
I did finally figure that out, I've just never seen that before. I just put a remote fill kit on the boat and the air line from the motor goes to the tank like the ones I've done in the past. Going up to the filler neck is new to me.
Which proves that even at 64 I am not too old to learn. Now if I could just remember it longer that a day or two...
