Just saw in one of my marine trade mags they now have self docking boats!

They’ve had joystick docking for several yrs but now you can be an absolute idiot and still dock your boat!

In Checkmates hay day, and I would agree w/Moe that it was 70’s & 80’s it was way different.

The motors were just getting good, and bigger.

The majority of their buyers were blue collar and it became the family toy.

W/the new/current boat pricing, 90% of buyers are well to do white collar workers and the boat is one of the toys.
As in, side by sides, pwc’s, Harleys etc.

I will always remember, decades ago, one of my Cracker Asss Fla brothers said, “Gary, once they invented the electric choke for OB’s, they ruined boating for the rest of us!”
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

It’s just so painful to watch and think about, the sad death of smaller fast boats as they get displaced by wake/surf boats.
When Caldwell bought the brand, I thought I was going to be able to update my boat some time soon with a new or almost new Checkmate, built with modern materials, no wood, that there would be a bunch of them available, I would get some better engine management/monitoring and reliability from the newer equipment, a little more speed, maybe pick/find a different colour.

Instead, it’s try and find another brand or join the wakeboard boat crowd and everything is stupid expensive.

I know Coop an ex Checkmate employee has some moulds and is making a few copies at Persuader boats, but it’s a small operation at this point, probably less than a dozen boats so far, a long way from making much choice available.

Have you looked at any of the west coast builders? On their website, Nordic has a nice looking 21 Crossfire O/B set up for family skiing. Not a B/R but maybe they'd open up the bow, who knows?

Good looking boat, Says it weighs 2800lbs, far too heavy, maybe that’s an inboard version of the same model? I really am looking for another open bow. I noticed they have the Evolution 22 open bow and available in both I/O or O/B power, but they are saying 3000lbs for that one, must be the I/O at that weight, I’d think the O/B needs to be half that without power to be able to get out of it’s own way.

Apologize for the thread derail... comment on the Nordic led me to their site. What are they building these boats with?? 28 foot cat says 4,700 pounds without power. Wow.

That sounds more like it, do you know if they have made very many of the crossfire or evolution in O/B configuration? I started searching and did not find any for sale.

The 21 Pulsare is light (800 - 1000 lb less than a 2400 from what I have researched). The 2400 is not a light boat. Checkmate claims 2000 lb for the closed deck and 2200 lb for the BRX. Not sure if the quoted weights were before or after the liner was added to the long deck. If I assume my long deck weighs 2000 lb (could weigh 2200 lb!!), my 300R with fluids and prop is around 550 lbs, my battery is 80 lbs, the steering pump is 20 lbs and the jack plate is at least 30 lbs, add just 20 gallons of fuel (120 lb). So the boat ready to run with no anchor, life jackets, cooler or people is at least 2800 lbs. If the long deck really weighs 2200 with the liner then the boat is 3000 lb ready to run without anyone in it. To me that is one reason the 2400 is so slow.

The new 450 on the 24 would be a good choice.

Several members on the Checkmate forum have 24 ft Pulsares with 400R's and they are getting 80 - 83 mph. When I bought mine, Dean told me there was a Mercury engineer that had 24 ft long deck and removed the 400R and installed a 450R, but said he did not know how it performed. Most likely about another 3 - 5 mph. However, it doesn't make economic sense. They were selling for around $120K with a 300R when Caldwell was producing them. A 450R would have added close to another $30K so you would have a 24 ft Checkmate worth $150K. For that money there are much better choices, at least for me. There was a 2017 24ft BRX listed for sale recently in this thread. Let's say you could buy it for $60K. Let's say you could sell the motor for $15K so you had $45K in it. You could buy a 450R for 60K rigged and you would have $105K in a 6 year old Checkmate if that is what someone wanted. For that money I would rather have a 25 Nordic crawl through that has both a small mid cabin and an open bow, but they only make them with sterndrives.
