Ignition
I bought that motor 15 years ago and when I disassembled it I noticed it was and even fire trigger. I forget what I did with that trigger base but I agree they are very rare. I was surprised it was even fire bc the guy wasn’t into racing at all. Then the block just sat in the corner of the shop for 15yrs.
I ran an even fire crank in a couple diff crossflows so I may have used it in one of them. I went back to odd fire bc I didn’t notice any diff except a smoother idle and diff exhaust sound. I actually think the odd fire has a better sound. Kinda the way Harley’s sound better than even fire Japanese twins (but make less power! Lol)
Anyway, this ECU has a separate 400w CDI power supply and uses it’s own digital sensors so it’s not using any of the OEM stuff. It does use the OEM coils but runs almost twice the voltage through them, around 400v primary.

Pretty cool xflow, still got the carbs you could run dual fuel lol.. Why 2 crank position sensors...

Crank sensors
Actually it uses 3. One is for sync, all ECUs use a sync sensor to determine position so the firing order starts off right. The second is the cyl trigger sensor, triggered on every cyl when in position to fire. The 3rd is unique to this ECU (VSFI) in that it is for quick starts. Most ECUs have to spin a crank Rev or two before they can determine RPM in order to correctly fire a cyl. VSFI uses the 3rd sensor as a magneto style ignition similar to the way a lawn mower ignition works. Just fires with no RPM data necessary. You set it right at the spot , say 5deg BTDC, where you want to fire the cyls until the ECU knows the rpm. This enables the engine to start immediately in under one crank Rev. Makes for incredibly fast starts, much faster than OEM systems. You can see it working in that Start YouTube vid. Then when RPM is determined by the ECU, the 3rd sensor is disabled and it continues using the main cyl trigger sensor. Very cool.

Interesing, 4 strokes use the sync bc they run on a 720 degree cycle with a 2 stroke your running on a 360... with missng teeth on the reluctor the ecu can tell crank position with 1 sensor,

OEM systems can use one sensor because they usually have custom made flywheels where the hall sensor is designed to sense a change in the raised trigger surfaces on the flywheel. This can be seen on the Ficht/ETec flywheel just under the starter ring. But a universal ECU like this one is intended to go on any motor, custom flywheel is not gonna happen, so a separate sync sensor is used. Also flying magnets (about .15” diam) are used so you can setup the sensors in any configuration. No custom flywheel is needed.
This ECU also has a tethered rich/lean handheld control, sometimes called a “steam wheel” where the user can adjust the mixture at speed while watching the EGTs. So you can tune as close to melting point as you wanna get so yes EGTs are a must. I hear the next version will have individual cylinder digital EGTs which will be real cool!

Ive been dreaming about something like this for a while. I contemplated trying mega squirt but this seems much less involved. Im going to give the merc brain a go with laser and adjustable fpr but if i have too many challenges, this system looks mighty attractive. Thanks for sharing your build a details
