Question Need your thoughts on possible forum additions

    Hi All,

I wanted your opinion on something I had been thinking about for a long time. Over the many years S&F has been around, I am constantly receiving messages and calls asking if we could add dedicated sections for cars and trucks. We already have a section for non-boating motorsports and many years ago I experimented with the idea of a separate site for it, however it had been suggested many, many times to make more specific car sub-forums here.

S&F is obviously a boating site, and I hesitate to add anything that could dilute it. On the flip side, a large majority of us are really into cars/trucks as well.

So, like everything, this is something I think you should all decide. With the complete site overhaul that should be finished by spring, I figure now is a good time to ask.

So, what do you all think?

As always, thank you so much for your support. The site simply would not exist without it.

    Greg

Greg, I applaud your approach and I think that there may be some value in diversifying, but as a member of a number of car and truck sites (Yellowbullet, Corvetteforums, LS1tech, Performancetrucks, and a few others) I feel obliged to tell you that you could be setting yourself up for a lot of headaches in trying to manage and administer all sorts of debates on a wide variety of topics where folks are even more opinionated than most of us are on here already.
And, as with all of those sites, unless you can find supporting sponsors and admins for each forum, you will probably be tearing your hair out trying to manage all of that, I think.
So, maybe for now think about keeping any vehicle forum related to boating, such as “tow vehicles” and “trailers”, etc.?
Another suggestion would be to consider whether to restructure the site to diversify topics based on the type of motor and drive system, by making each forum a little more specific based on that criteria, such as: “two-stroke outboards”, “four-stroke outboards”, “stern-drives”, “jet-drives”. You might at some point even have to add “electric motors”, lol.
I’m thinking that by restructuring the forums in that way, in particular the older two-strokes from the new four strokes, you could avoid some of the vexed debate that always creeps into any discussion about one or the other, which, although sometimes entertaining, always ends up with folks saying things that really aren’t constructive or conducive to friendly relations between members, which we should always try to engender, IMV, since this site has always been about us helping each other and sharing experiences in boating, I think?
In short, maybe some fine tuning is all that’s needed to make this site a little better, rather than a revamp which might take it into a direction which detracts from all that’s great about this site.
That’s my advice anyhow, worth every penny you paid for it, lol.

A while back there was a post for “Hot Chicks & Boats”
A couple of responses, but seemed to peter out quickly
IDK if the sponsors would object…

Love the site as it is and really appreciate your efforts to keep it alive. When I get on, I go to the Activity Stream then New Posts. If this were my site, I would leave everything alone except all political posts would be in the political section only. This way the only way to see politics is to make an effort to see politics. Without it staying at the top for everyone to see it might stop all the whining about them.

Keep it boats. The more you introduce other forms of motorsports, the more some folks will feel obliged to want to include, motorcycles, what about airplanes, ATV's or Side By Sides.
What I love about this site is that it's simple and about one thing.... performance boats.
I like cars, especially classic muscle cars. but if I want to talk about that I go to another site.

Did you have an F car website years ago?

I subscribe to the stick to your knitting school of business. That’s my 2 cents.

There have really been some great suggestions from the members. The majority part of me says to just keep it boats but I also understand the trailers and tow rigs also have a place. Beyond that, I say leave the cars and general stuff out of it. Plenty of forums to go find that stuff if somebody is looking.

I think it would be pretty cool to have the motorsports sub forum divided up into sections. Like most here, I'm addicted to multiple forms of checking account draining addictions. Hell, I'd like to have a MTB sub forum too, although I doubt that's very popular here. I think there's a lot of us here that have drifted into other motorsports, so it might be a popular section. I could talk all day aboot motorcycles.

I'd merk the political section first, then moderate the other sections a little more deliberately before anything else, but that's just me. I'd like to see this be more of a community again. That just me tho.
