    Mercury LU on Yamaha

What is done to put a Mercury lower unit on a Yamaha? Do they cut the mid and weld a Mercury bottom half onto it?

Simply remove the Yamaha Mid section and Power head and swap on Merc replacement units . IDK but best of luck I am sure someone here will be able to point ya in the right direction.

I'd start by investigating the Hydrotech stuff before swapping to a Merc gearcase Yamaha Gearcase (hydrotecmarine.com)

with what they can do now with the yamaha gear case i dont see a reason for the swap. hydrotec offers a fat shaft kit, a nose cone and skeg re-work, a billet carrier and even 1.62 gears..

The sporty case is much stronger than the Yamaha case.

The fat shaft and 1:62 gear-set .. wonder where those come from ..

Never done it to a yamaha but have on several omc projects... I have adapted 2.5 and 3.0 sportmasters to both v6 and v8 omc mids, make an adapter plate from a piece of 1/2 to 5/8 aluminum plate depending if you have to counterbore holes or not. Center on the driveshaft and drill both patterns, making the shift work is another story can be done many ways. Nose cones and epoxy work great in freshwater not so much in the salt.

the sporty case itself has better aerodynamics then the yamaha for sure. the water intakes on the yamaha case needs work to make it run high enough to be efficient. the ones done by hydrotec look alot more like a sporty when finished.

they seem to hold up pretty well around here even with the nizpro s/c upgrade done. 1,62 gears are clearly a merc inspired idea but thats fine, at least now you have options

with all this available the sporty conversion seems alot of work imo.

It seems like Hydro Tec's upgrades are focused on the Yamaha HP gearcase that was used on the HPDI's. My "new" motor is a 3.1 with the stock gearcase. It's still worth asking them what's available. Thanks for the input!
