    Merc 2.5 drag serial number?

I have four 2.5's that I haven't used for awhile. I know one is a 2.5 drag 300. Can anyone post the serial numbers for this engine or would it be better if I listed all four engine serial numbers and them someone can tell me what is what?

You list them and we can help. Are all of them unpainted motors or some of them black?

All of the engines are unpainted. I could find the serial numbers on three of them but I just couldn't seem to locate a number on only one.

Here are the other three; 0482543, 06776849 and 9392851. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for good news but just in case I'll be sitting down when I get a reply. They were all bought online from people that I don't know a thing about and I took their word for the information they provided.

    0482543 is missing a number

    06776849 if the first 6 is actually a G then 0G776849 is a 1998 big bearing 260

9392851 is also missing a number which could be a 0 at the beginning, but 09392851 does not come back as anything.
If the number is 0[some letter not number 9]
392851 then I could tell you what it is, but I need to know that letter

    Mach,
The good thing is that most people know that there are 26 letters in the alphabet. And for the 2.5, Merc used only a few of those.

    Only 10 numbers between 0 - 9

That narrows it down quite a bit.

The only place that Mercury placed a letter in the serial number is in the second slot.

Here is a location where you see the "range" for yourself. Let us know what you find

I couldn't quite figure out how to find my serial numbers using this site, I'm not really sure some of the pictures I am sending are even serial numbers, but this is the best I could do.

If you look on top of the motor between the flywheel and exhaust chest, there is a round silver Welch plug with your serial number on it. At least on black motor Mercs there is.

I never seen a race motor have that stamped plug...not to say the never did, but I know I've never seen one.

No idea what your other serial numbers are. They look like how mercury did serial numbers before the mid 80s, but that is not likely if they are 2.5L engines. The 0G776849 is a 98 260 which is confirmed by the date stamp and the "PP" block stamp in the pic. I assume none of the other engines have letter block stamps like the "PP" ? I have no idea what 9392851 or 0482543 are.

I'm no 2.5 parts interchange expert. But I do know that 260 and 300 drag heads / head gaskets, will interchange (same bolt pattern) and the 280 bolt pattern / O-rings and an animal unto themselves.

There was a small chart floating around EE, FF, PP, etc. that covered most of the block groupings. Anyone gotz a copy to post ... ???

The BAM site .. lists motors by serial number runs from beginning to end on certain models. I posted a few from the "race motor" selection. if your fits in the range .. you know what you have ..

think tha numbers without tha "0/letter at start" may be an over tha counter power head type thing, replacement and/or blocks won't have tha regular "serial number".. although they do have "some" hi perf. serial numbers that do not have tha letter in it.. they (merc) can tell with some of tha numbers but gettin' someone from merc ta trace it down is another story.....

Here’s the chart that I think Chaz is referring to:
