FUJIMO. In your vast stash of all things Mercury do you have the parts drawings for the 44XS motor? I did a lot of my racing in front of 44ci Mercury motors and I would like to see what the final "factory race " motor looked like inside. I had a wish list of things I would have liked to do to that platform and I wonder if any of them were done in the final product.

...just saw this. parts drawings are inaccurate for what i think you're after. crowley marine does list the 44xs parts lists & drawings if you want to go to their site & look them up. who can help you with the 44xs powerhead details though, would be alan, who goes by aeroliner (louisiana) over on boatracingfacts. also david at www.aeroliner-boats.com in new smyrna beach, fl. they are brothers & know lotz about the 44. both of their contact info is on the new smyrna site. hope this helps...

From what I have been able to find out the 44xs covered most of my "wish list". The only thing they missed were the reed cage blocks and reeds. They seem to be same as the older 44s. Would have thought they would have put in better flowing reed assemblies.

They are the same. There was no reason for a "better" part because when these motors were made and sold they were the only legal motor in the class being sold. I think for a few years, the 1950's 55H motors were still legal and it would have been a real problem to obsolete the guys who had been keeping the class alive. The motor needed to be on par with the 55H's, not dramatically faster.

Up until about 1972 the D class limit in both Stock Outboard and OPC was 39.9 ci. Up until 1970 the only competitive motor in E class OPC was the 44ci Mercury 500. With the arrival of the 3 cylinder 49 inch motors the D class limit was changed to allow the 500s to be used in D OPC. I am quite familiar with these changes from the OPC side and I guess that the Stock Outboard made the same change due to the fact that Mercury had not built a 39in motor in more than a decade by then.
